Faking an "M"?

I saw an e46 yesterday with an M badge on the back, but it was a sedan and only had two exhaust tips paired on the far left side of the bumper. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but the e46 M3 only comes in a coupe (or cabriolet), and has four exhaust tips in pairs on the bumber about a third of the way in from each side.

Why would someone try to pass their sedan off as an "M"? Anyone who knows about cars and BMW's will know that the M3 doesn't come in a sedan (in the e46 bodystyle anyway), and therefore wil know it's just a fake badge, and anyone who doesn't know about cars doesn't know what the heck the M means anyway and therefore won't be impressed by it (vs seeing 325 or 330).

Thoughts?

(the car I saw was parked in someone's driveway, so I might go back and try to snap a picture if anyone's interested)

No you don't have to take a picture. He is probably a insecure poser, who thinks the badge is gonna make the vehicles car value go through the roof.

"M"-pos-ters

I have seen a few fake "M" BMWs. It's funny, the people who actually care about "M" cars are probably for the most part BMW connoisseurs... but there is no way to fake out a BMW enthusiast that you have an "M" car LOL

i see that quite often. in fact, i just saw that on a 525i. the funny thing was they still kept the 525i badge and added an ///M badge right next to it and also stuck one on the grille.

pathetic.

I posted this on bimmerfest about some poser who changed his e90 325i badging to 335i. The same logic can be applied to people who make non-M cars into "M" cars...

Cost of replacing the "2" with a "3"............................................... .............$5
Dual Custom Exhaust........................................... .......................................$300
Making people think you have a 335i.............................................. ............retarded
Having everyone in the car community know your car
is badged as something it's not, and that you're a douchebag...................priceless

For some things in this world, there is the real product, for the morons
who are insecure about what they own so they pretend they have
something better, there is upgrade rebadging...

I see them all the time in the San Diego area... What really confuses me is people who obviously spent some time/cash on new rims, lowering, etc and then stick an M badge on. It's like doing up your house in National City and claiming you live in La Jolla.....

That car is hilarious Nikki, I can't believe it exists! Not only does it exist, but that you have pictures of it. The funniest part is that the guy (or gal) spent all his money on his fake badging and can't afford to fix his mangled a$$ front and rear bumpers!

1.) This thread topic is among the oldest in the BMW forum book.

2.) Who cares.

I've often thought about temporarily slapping a fake plastic M badge onto my own car (and intentionally crooked, no less!) and then snapping a photo of it just so I can watch all the small minded "enthusiasts" freak out about it.

No offense intended, of course.

Apparently, you care enough to post on the subject. Secondly, more than 10 of us today care enough to at least comment on the absurdity of the exercise. Thirdly, your decision to generalize all of us as small minded is in itself a very small minded excercise; surely you see the irony in that.

Finally, for someone with a quote like that from Jeremy Clarkson in your signature, you sure do have a lot of posts on this forum. And how else would you know the topic is old and repetitive without yourself repetitively visiting web forums and reading the threads?

No offense intended, of course.

No offense taken.

And no, this isn't so much of a "car club" as it is a simple medium for the exchange of information. You don't see me attending meets or actively soliciting friendship amongst the membership base, now, do you? However, I believe I'm still entitled to take an interest in the subject at hand. To each their own.
