128i vs 125i

Hi Folks, Newbie here. Not sure if this is not right place or thread to post. I have just gotten my ride few days back. It's a 125i rated 218bhp/270Nm. The 1series range has just launch in Singapore and includes the 130i hatchback at 265bhp/315Nm.

I found out that there exist a 128i.

1)What's the hardware difference between a 128i and 125i? engine, intakes and ECU wise?

2)Is the difference between the 125i and 130i only the ECU mapping? Any hardware diff? If no, any way I can remap it to the 130i specs?

Love the car. Pardon my ignorance. Hopefully I can pick up many details from this site.

I'm pretty sure non-US x25i cars have 2.5 liter engines. Even if it is a 3.0 liter engine, all the parts, labor, and programming would cost more than buying the next higher model.

Oh, I'm pretty sure it's a 3L. 2996 to be exact? So you mean there's other parts different besides the ECU software?

i think both 130 and 125 (and very likely 128) have exact same engine n52b30 (it's even shared with X3 and X5 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_N52) which has been rated at 272/315, so there's more power to be had....

Yes, my 125i shares the same engine 2996cc N52b30 as the 130i. But I'm not sure about the 128i in NA. I ask the sales rep here in singapore about the other hardware diff but he didn't mention any.

So I tot I do some asking here. And hopefully bump my 125i up to 130i specs (that is assuming all the hardware is the same) with some sort of ECU programming.

I did a bit of research into this myself... didnt end up finding terribly much.
if you want to read up on the diffs between the 125 and 130 go here: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6487 looks like it is the intake manifold and ecu...
with regards to the 125 and 128 i read something about a slightly diff exhaust????? and probably ecu... but nothing conclusive

125i/128i/130i are all same engine.
125i and 128i can be easily re-tuned to 272 HP, but not all chip tuners have know-how to do it.

1 year on?

It was all covered 1 year ago - see above.

125/128/130 all basically use the same engine with different ECU's, and probably the odd other difference.

125i = 215hp (Coupe only, no hatch)
128i = 230hp (Coupe only - US market)
130i = 272hp (Hatch only IIRC no longer in production)

They are sold in different markets e.g. UK / Europe never got the 128i.

Whats your question?

the hatch 130i was only sold with 265PS and since it fullfills the Euro 5 emission class it "only" has 258PS (all valid for the German market)

probably more info on the 325 to 330 conversion, but i found this post

http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showp...2&postcount=21

in this thread
http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showt...&highlight=328

Basically, there is a three stage intake manifold that has a few valves in it and an ECU tune to control the motor with the new IM. at least from what i could tell.

I don't think it'll be very cheap, but I think a 265 hp 128 would be pretty sick. especially when you add a few other 130 series bolt ons to kind of sneak the power up a little more.

Well someone in another forum claimed that 130i is using N53 Direct Injection I6 application of this engine, which is totally different.. I couldn't confirm this yet however if that is the case, it is almost impossible..DI vs Valvetronic etc

the 130i has never been sold with the direct injection engine
there are several tuning companies in germany which lift the 125i up to 270-286PS
for example DS-Motorsport changes something in the intake manifoild and remap the ecu to deliver 270PS. with their matching exhaust system you get 286ps (the 270PS stage costs about 1500€)

If they sold a manual for the 128i I have, I would get a manual from these guys and see if it says anything useful about the engine differences:

http://www.whichmanuals.com/Cars/BMW...op-Manual.html

I was looking at the 3 series manuals and they are supposed to address the 325 and 328 models which I presume have the same engine difference. The 1 series manual shows the 130 but not the 128.

I totally agree that 130i never had the DI, we can skip that claim.

I just checked www.realoem.com and it looks like the intake is same... I just can't understand why the intake needs to change by tuners, while bmw uses the same..

Edit: Well I actually realized that part#s are different.

Evice, not sure if you have already read this or not but, the 130i has a 3 stage intake manifold whereas we 125i and 128i have only a single stage intake manifold. That could be a reason as to why DS changes the intake

as far as I know, our 125i over here in Germany has a modified valvetronic software which caueses the valves not to open as wide as they are able to. furthermore there is a part in the intake which has a reduction in it's diameter. changing it only takes effect with the corect valvetronic software.
DS motorsports is said to change this exact part and give the engine an even better valvetronix software to use the full potential of the engine (that's why they promise a little bit more horses than the 130i offers)
