TRI-STATE AREA Window Tinting

Hey guys -

Does anyone know what is the legal limit or which shade % is acceptable
without get a ticket or being rejected by the DMV later on down the road?

I just ordered my 1 last week and luckily found this forum around the same time-

I live in CNJ and was North Carolina last week.
Window tinting is very, very inexpensive down in NC.

Any idea how much in our area?

Thanks!

70% in the front in NY. Getting my done in a couple of days (not at the legal limit), they said it'd be $225

Thanks.

I'd like to do the back and all side windows if possible.
Maybe at 50% to 60%.

I saw a Mercedes in NJ with really BLACK windows.
Wonder how many times its been stopped. lol

What are most 1 owners doing with theirs?

i'm doing 30% on the side, and 20% on the back. i've seen a lot of pics with guys with 30%, and i think it looks great. Darker back window is to help with the headlights at night..

That's a good point about the night time driving.

Is 20% or 30% on the darker side compared to 60% or 70%?

Or is it the other way around.

when we say 30% tint, that means it has 30% light transmission, i.e. letting 30% of the light in. that's much darker than the legal 70%.

When I lived in NJ about 5 years ago they gave me all kinds of grief and made me remove tinting and it was extremely light. Could barely tell it was there except for the trim at the top of the window. Don't know if it is:iono: the same now.

I sort of know the general manager of my wa-wa (convenience store) from getting coffee everyday;
he see cops in all day and knows quite a few.
I'll ask him to ask around and see what's the general consensus these days regarding the limits, tickets etc.
and post something later this week.

Tinting the front windows in NJ is illegal regardless of shade. Its up to the PO's discretion whether or not to ticket you though. You're municipality may vary.

Up in Bergen Cty., i've yet to be stopped or even having a passerby cop give me trouble, as the majority of cars up here are tinted...some even windshield.

In NJ - not good to tint the windows if you've got a bag of weed in the car or you go to bars (especially during the day). You'll be stopped all the time.

Tint installed in NY. All tint is illegal is what I heard.

I don't have my 135i yet but on my current vehicle, which is a Scion tC... (don't laugh). I know it's a long ways from a tC to a 135i but my tC was a project, and quite a nice one at that. Severely modified, several grand into it, but still miles away from my (awaited on) BMW.

The tint on my White tC is, I believe like %20 on the sides, and %30 on the back, and it's plenty dark; but not too dark and a nice combination. I live in NY, and the man who installed the tint said to me that 'all' tint is illegal in NYS. I believe he only sells %15, %20, and %30 (I might be wrong but think that is accurate.) He said to me 'anything' I install on your car is illegal in NY and that a Cop 'could' ticket you if he wanted; however that is rare unless the tint is super dark..

Sound right? He could have been saying that everything 'he' sells is not legal? Also I believe he said becuase it's a coupe, and like on a 4-door sedan or an SUV, the backseat and the back of the vehicle can legally be tinted, but not the sides of a 2-door. Your comments.

I'm waiting to see my brother tomorrow (he lives in North Carolina now) and will be in CNJ later today.
He restores old cars and modifies all kinds of cars as a hobby. He knows quite a few people in the auto business that can recommend a good tint and/or tinting company. Keep you posted...
