First time I've heard that regarding the 1-Series. Take it to the dealer, if nothing else is wrong they can at least put some anti-squeal compound on the back of the pads.

This is a new one it seems.

I don't hear a sound out of my brakes, even when I'm hard on them, so I'd say something is up with yours. Could be as simple as the anti-squeal backing as mentioned above, but it could be a sign that something needs a little work.

Screeching is a new one. Your dealer's service department should be able to sort it out. You'll be fine.

In InsideLine's long-term test blog, they complained about the squealing as well. And the brake dust. :iono:

Did you bed in the brakes beforehand? If not, do so. If it STILL screeches, go to service.

This is a general guide, but the concept is the same: http://www.zeckhausen.com/bedding_in_brakes.htm

That is exactly why BMW owners put up with all the brake dust, no noise from the brakes.

If any small bits of gravel get wedged between the pad and rotor it will definintely make a noise.

I've also got the squeaks. Do those spray on cleaners work?

Just rebed the pads. In other words do a number of 60-5mph hard stops and then let the car sit so the brakes can cool off. Another thing you can do is remove the pads and bevel the edges down. A lot of brake pads nowadays don't have the sharp 90 degree edges, but instead you'll see the edges at a small 45 degree cut (bevelled). This helps prevent a bit of squeal. Dremel works best to do it.

New pads need to be bedded in. Take a look at the link in Qube's post, above.

My car has been doing this too for the past 3 months! I had only had it for 4 months before it started screeching. I plan to go to the dealer (just haven't had time). Silverbullet- have your brakes gotten better since the dealer fixed them?

Someone said (maybe on this forum? Can't recall: )

Europeans don't care if brakes squeak, as long as they work.

Americans don't care if brakes work, as long as they don't squeak.

Since asbestos was banned, squeaky brakes (as long as we're not talking about the squealer indicating that the pads are worn out,) are just the price of having performance brakes on a performance car.

^Not on a car that cost me $38k. Maybe a ford taurus. And for the record, my brembos on my STI never squealed, even after 2yrs of owning it. I've barely had the car now for 6 months and I def don't brake late or hard brake. The dealer should fix the problem so I'm not too worried.

Just curious - what do you think they're going to do to fix it?
