Brake pads for track?
I tracked my car yesterday and the brake pads didn't hold up that well (cracked around the edges and discoloured). What race pads can I get for this car? My friend has Pagid blue on his Carrera S and it is awesome. But I don't believe I can get it in 135i size. What are those of you who are running a race program doing in terms of pads? Also I have decided to try the BMW performance rotors. I think the fact that they are slotted and drilled will really help in dissapating heat even if they don't give greater braking performance.

What brand of brake pads did you use before? I don't think you can get the same brake pads your friend has for your size.

To answer your question, I'd go with the Axis Ultimate, great bite, low dust, high operating temps, high fade resistance. |

We are going to be trying some pads from TMS on the 135i race car at our next race on July 20th weekend - we'll post a report.

FYI Axxis Ultimates are street pads. GREAT street pads (my favorite for that task) but street pads nonetheless, and completely unsuitable for track usage.
I like Hawk HT10s or DTC-70s, but I'm not sure if they make a 135i application yet. Ferodo DS3000s are good too. IME, Porterfield R4, Pagid RS14 (Black), and Hawk Blue are not suitable for heavy track use. However, it should be noted that I don't brake until I see God. Carbotech will make you custom pads if you send them a backing plate. |

I got some track pads! My local brake specialist (Race Brakes for those in Melbourne) fitted a pair of track pads made for AMG in my car and put in Motul RBF600 in preparation for my 2nd track day on Sat. My factory pads has fine cracks on them and has discoloured completely. He said the front pads are rubbish, but the rears are pretty good pads (made by different companies). They left the backing plate off as the length of these AMG pads are exactly the same as our cars with the backing plate. Woo hoo! I will report back after sat on these and the fluid change.

Or does the 135i front brakes have a secondary backing plate in there as the calipers are a little too wide? I'm confused as there must be a backing plate in there somewhere between the brake material (which touches the discs) and the caliper pistons. The backing plate distributes the piston load evenly, and stops the situation of the piston rubbing directly onto the rotors.

No modifiation is required on the AMG pads. He puts it in as is. I believe there is a secondary backing plate there. Not 100% sure as I was in a hurry to leave. Give Howard a call and ask him. I need to go back there next week too so may just ask him as well.

This is strange.. do the pad retaining bolts line up too? the stock pads are held in place by two screws for each pad that go through the caliper and into tapped holes on the pads. We need more info! This could be a major revelation...
edit: added pics of the screw locations... |

Ok I know what is going on now...it appears that AMG brakes has the same hole dimension as our cars! I took a good look at the new pads and the stock pads. What I said above is wrong. I think what Howard must have said to me is that the new pads are longer, hence more surface area will be swept (which he did say). He also said that he had to not fit the backing plate, which is this thin metal plate that sits between the pads and calipers presumably to prevent/lessen clunking noises. You can see from the blue pads (Turner motorsport?) above that the backing plates are not in place either. The backing plate is molded to the shape of the OE pads, hence it will not fit the AMG pads. So what does this mean? Great news everyone, we have many options as I am sure the likes of Pagids, Ferado etc make pads for AMG! I will find out for you guys what model AMG it is...

And the extra plus is that the AMG pads are longer hence will give us better braking power presumably. I am now wondering if that is all Turner motorsport did - took an AMG pad they make and sell them as "exclusive" 135i pads?

Bad news. They don't actually know what AMG model it is! They were commisioned to make a few of them previously and these are the leftovers. He also said that it isn't perfect fit and he had to modify it a bit but the holes fit exactly. Back to the drawing board I think.

We received some brake pads from Turner - but we found out there is a very good reason for why they are expensive. They are essentially custom brake pads.
What they made for us are Hawk HT-10. They take a very large, expensive Hawk pad and custom machine it down to the size for a 135i. Considering that the pad makers have not put out any pads in mass production yet, it's a great alternative. I guess they can make you just about any kind of pad you want (PFCs, etc.) using that method.
