Last night's hail storm...

Long story short...I sold my old car to my parents who had lent it to my cousin for a bit in exchange for him driving it back to AZ from Austin. Well for whatever reason he was driving around last night when the big storm hit and the poor car is just a mess. There were dents on every single body panel. His insurance company probably isn't going to be too happy.

Yep. One of the guys I work with has to park his G37 outside and his car was nearly destroyed. I'll be surprised if he gets out of it without having to get a new hood and trunk.

Geez. Having never lived in an area where abnormally large hail occurs, are the reports of baseball-size hail exaggerated? Is the hail a solid chunk of ice or is it less tightly packed? What does that sort of hail do to your property?

Baseball - softball sized hail are not exaggerations. I had some firends trapped inside a minivan that was being pelted by baseball + sized hail. Totalled the vehicle.

Not an exaggeration at all. Central Texas had softball sized hail about two weeks ago. A friend of mine has put close to $10k in repairs on his cars that were outside during the storm. All I can say is that I’m glad I had a car port.

I'm sure there are better videos or pictures laying around but this should give you a good idea:

Surname - the ice forms as the rain is sucked up into the storm's updraft. The stronger the storm, the stronger the updraft. The hail falls partway to the ground, gets pulled back up, and cycles through that. It forms like a 'jawbreaker' - dense nasty and can kill if you are caught out in it.

I was on a trail ride at about 9500 feet once in a hail storm, won't forget that experience (nor the wrangler who didn't have the common sense to get the horses off high ground when lightning was striking in the vicinity ; -).
