BMW 135i Coupe Depreciation ?

Hi,

I am looking for a 135i Coupe however am concerned that this car with its big engine and relative poor fuel consumption will depreciate quickly compared to others in the coupe range.

What do you guys think..... Am I better off with a 123d ?

Also how long would you guess it would take before you will see used 135i coupe available from BMW for £25K ??? ( that is my ideal budget to spend )

Thanks

Hi there, did you have a look on the BMW UK website there are already ex demos for sale there on approved used cars section.. maybe a while though before you see a 135i under £25k. I personally would go for a used 123d Coupe with good spec!!

Cheers, Nick

yes i think you are right, particually in these days of approaching £1.20 a litre...

then again, any car worth 30K is going to depreciate like mad, 50% residual after 3yrs could be on the horizon! never quite like that when you want to buy a 2nd hand one though is it.

Many thanks for the advice…..
I head says 123d however my heart is still screaming 135i !

According to What Car the depreciation for the cars is as follows:

Many thanks for the advice…..
I head says 123d however my heart is still screaming 135i !

According to What Car the depreciation for the cars is as follows:

BMW 1 Series Coupe 123d M Sport 2dr £26,350 (new)
£19,839 Year 1
£16,497 Year 2
£13,776 Year 3
£11,542 Year 4

BMW 1 Series Coupe 135i M Sport 2dr £29,755 (new)
£18,796 Year 1
£15,548 Year 2
£13,497 Year 3
£11,595 Year 4

As you can see there is very little difference between 123d and 135i after the first two years. The figures quoted are trade prices so I guess you can expect at least a 20-30% uplift on these prices from an approved BMW dealer.

I just can not see the 135i holding onto each value in these times of economic uncertainty…… However that may just mean some “bargains” to be had in 12 months time……. Any more thoughts from anyone else?

Cheers

Personally, I'd ignore the What Car info for the moment as it's just a guess.

If anything, I'd see it the other way around. The vast majority of 1 coupes will be the diesels, with only 3-400 135s coming to the UK every year. Supply will be far more restricted than the 120/123d.

Going by the general reviews and forums such as this, there seems to a bit of a cult developing around the 135i, especially with regard to the comments from Clarkson and the sentiments from the full Evo review.

At the end of the day, if you're worried about depreciation on a car, don't spend 25-30k on a 1er and go out and buy a 3-4 year old Golf or Mini and that will be as good as you'll get in the more 'normal' echelons of motoring

With the very limited supply of 135i's in the UK I can see the depreciation curve initially being fairly steep, year 1 but then easing as there are not enough cars.

Main dealers are only getting an allocation of 2 cars per month regardless of engine, and since the vast majority are going to be either 120's or 123's there will not be very many 135's.

However, £35k for a 135i with options is a lot of money and since a 335i Coupe can easily be bought used for the same, most cars will sell for £35k new and then be worth <£30k as soon as they leave the showroom. This is evident in virtually all the ex-demos that have been sold - Notts Sytner loaded black 135i (worth £36k new) went for £29k with 5k and 3 months old.

The C02 is 'only' 205 which means the car does not fit into the evil VED bands which really helps.

The engine is so good in this car that I really think it will get a 'cult' following.

the 'cult' status on the site about the 135i is made as the USA only get the 135 or the similar priced 128.. hence why there is much talk of it... and little of the carbon neutral versions we get here

don't get me wrong the 135 is quick, quite quick enough to be honest., and an awesome overall car. but loaded up its expensive, i had a choice what to buy, i could have had a 135 cheaper than my 120, allbeit lower spec but i wanted auto for a start, and the running costs will be muc, much higher.. unless you have a company fuel card, or your just rich!!

There are really only two questions here:

1) Do you want the performance and / or relative exclusivity that a 135i will bring you over a 123d?

2) Can you afford it - fuel, insurance, depreciation.

Once you know the answers to the above, which surely none of us can answer better than yourself, you'll have your answer

IMHO…..

I think the number of people who will want to buy a used 135i will be quite small. Lets face it this is never going to be a sensible choice of car if you are worried about fuel costs, insurance, running costs, road tax ect….. This is a car that appeals to the heart not the head……

I do not buy into the “cult” car view…… Do not get me wrong, I think the 135i is fantastic however does not quite have the “wow” factor required of a true cult car in the UK.

I will keep a close eye on the BMW approved used car web site….. my betting is that once the crop of current £30-32K cars are all sold…. The next batch that appear will be less than £30K and in 12 months time we will see some appearing around the £25K mark.

Now if you are able to buy a fully loaded 12 month old 135i for £25K…. I will be at the front of the queue. Will be interesting to see how the used market develops……

Cheers

I'm not sure how many "fully loaded" 135is we're going to see on the used market - of those I've seen ordered, very few look anywhere near fully loaded, so don't hold your breath. And no, I won'd be selling mine in 12 months! ;-)

Well should you change your mind about selling in a year or so time………..
I have to say, you car spec is exactly what I would choose, good call on the options list.
