i just drove a neighbors ssk on his rx-8. first one i ever tried, it was amazing. the shifts were so precise, it was like bolt action on a rifle. there was no change in amoutn of resistence for the enitre shift which made it much faster. but he said a lot of it had to do with how the tranny on the rx-8 came stock.

My guy installed the SSK this morning and it took around 3 hours start to finish. The exhaust does NOT have to be lowered but he did have to take off the Trans support and some other items. For those of you considering this mod: this is a VERY WORTHWHILE mod because I'm enjoying my 135i twice as much now that it shifts like a real sports car (snick - snick). Throws are VERY short and direct, it has a very mechanical feel and I promise you will not regret this purchase.

Any play in mechanism while in gear, or does it feel pretty tight?
guesstimate on % reduction in shift throw? Quote:

Sorry but we didn't take any pics while the install was going on. I would guess the shifts are reduced by 40-50% over stock and I have the unit adjusted to the shortest position. There is NO slop whatsoever in the shifter while in gear and I thought the stock unit moved around a lot while in gear. One more thing: I honestly don't think the shift effort has increased much at all. Back in 2001 I installed a SSK in my C5 vette and the effort went WAY up over stock so I know that sometimes happens but not here.

when you say you have it adjusted to the shortest position, do you mean to the lowest position?
Can you comment on the reach? I've read on e90post that the oem ssk tends to increase the reach. I would actually prefer to have the reach reduced. for me, 5th gear is a stretch and if the reach is increased, it wouldn't be usable. How is the effort for going into reverse? i hear that is where you would feel it the most. how is the notchiness from 1-->2 as compared to stock? does it come with a shifter and boot? how much did the kit cost? around $350? Who installed it for you? How much did that cost? I've seen the oem ssk's without a boot and knob for $60. http://www.mileoneparts.com/partloca...catalogid=4462 - guys on e90 get it for their 335's, so it probably fits a 135 too. thanks

I had it installed by a friend who is a Honda Master Tech and it was done in my garage since I have a lift.
Mine is adjusted to it's lowest position and I don't feel the reach is uncomfortable, even to 5th gear. I would not say the effort is objectionable for any gear, including reverse. The notchiness from 1st to 2nd is greatly reduced but it can still be felt just a little bit. The kit does NOT come with a shift boot or knob, you still use the stock pieces for that. I paid $350.00 for the unit directly from UUC. As a side note let me say that I'm coming from a long line of Honda's and Acura's so I've been spoiled by what I consider some of the best shifter action in the industry. I now feel that the 135i compares very favorably with my previous and current rides: ie. NSX, Acura CL, Civic Si, Integra GSR. |

^ thank you so much for answering all of my questions, it sounds like an awesome mod and its amazing that it compares favorably to an nsx.
i just need clarification on one more thing - how does the reach compare to stock? (more, less or about the same?) thanks again
