Cheap winter rims?

I'm thinking about getting a set of winter tires mounted on a set of inexpensive rims so that I can easily swap out the tires for winter driving. However I don't want the rims to be so cheap looking that my car looks like sh*t for 4 months out of the year. Does anyone have any suggestions for a set of inexpensive rims that will still look nice on the 135i in the winter? (I don't mind stepping down a size if needed)

Edit: Shit I meant to post this in the "General" forum. Moderator feel free to move.

Yeh, start checking the Tire Rack website towards the end of summer. They should be putting together their winter tire packages for the 1er by then, & they usually have some really nice looking alloy wheels for very reasonable prices.
We bought a set of Blizzaks on alloy wheels two winters ago for my wife's 2007 CR-V, & the 17" Sport Edition wheels we bought for $100 apiece are nicer than the factory wheels.:w00t:

^^^YEP, me also. I will get 5-17" wheels and 5 Dunlop 3D snows. A spare and a little weight for winter. But the size I want isn't on Tireracks list, Gill said they will be next fall. 225/45/17"

The tire they suggest is 205/50/17"

A question that stems from your post - do you really NEED (im using that word loosely here) winter tires (not rims!) for driving in moderate northeastern weather (think NJ) with the all-season tires that come standard on the 128?

I'm lucky I guess, coz I just removed a set of Blizzak LM25's in 225/45-17 that only have about 3,000 miles of wear on them. I was glad when Gill told me that was a perfect size for an aggresive look and still have traction in winter.

As you know this past Winter was quite mild. Maybe 3 days of dicey driving. But thats not typical. Last Winter I removed my Winters second week in March and we got nailed with a March snow storm. My summers were useless.

As far as All-seasons go you could get by OK. But might have trouble in a storm over 6 inches. RWD in All-seasons is not the best.

Not to be a smart ass, but that is a question that only a person who has never driven a car with a good set of snow/ice tires on would ask.
Seriously, if you need to drive to get to work in the winter, and it snows at all were you live, you will absolutely love what a set of Blizzaks, or similar tires will do to your car.:headbang:

The best thing I ever did for my G35 6mt was get winter tires... even with only a lil snow on the road my car was all over the place... switched to the snow tires and it was a dramatic difference... I will be getting winter tires and rims for sure... even though our NJ winters have been a bit mild it still will give me piece of mind when the roads do get dicey...

Which Blizzaks? Tire rack lists 9 varieties?

For pinksnyper, I'd recommend the Dunlop WinterSport M3 - either run-flat or regular. They combine good snow/ice performance with decent dry road handling, unlike the Q rated (rather "squirmy") rubber our more northerly friends need.

Also, I've found that (at least in the Mid-Atlantic area), the very act of purchasing winter tires and/or a snow blower will insure a mild winter.

Tire rack suggested V rated performance Blizzaks for me. I live 50 miles north of Philadelphia. In the dry they were almost like my summers in terms of handling. Blizzak LM25 performance snow is what I got.

I am considering this set-up.

Blizzak LM-22 RFT 225/45/17 V rated
28# $169 each.

Sport Edition F-10 17"x8"
20.5# $119 each

Mounted/TPMS/Shipped/Total $1426

Cool, thanks for the tips. I didn't realize Tirerack.com had that winter wheel package thing, it will come in very handy.

We don't get a ton of snow here, so I'm looking for a tire that does OK in the snow but handles well on cold dry days as well. From what I hear the stock 18" RF tires that come with the 135i don't do well in the cold/snow at all.

^^^NO WAY. The stock summer tires are deathtraps in any cold conditions even without snow. They shouldn't be driven near freezing temps. I HIGHLY suggest dedicated winter tires/wheels for the "1" series being RWD. The V rated Blizzak LM-22 are said to handle great on dry roads in the winter. I have had Q-rated snows b4 and they suck, they feel like your driving in a bowl of jello. V-rated snows are awesome for winter, unless you live where winters are BAD. In that case a Q-rated tire might be better and safer.

I can't wait to see how these fit and work for everyone .. I'll be doing the same thing once I get back east ..

probably a dumb question, but.....

This probably a dumb question, but.....

Since the 135i has wider tires in the back, do the winter tires have to have the same set-up with wider tires in the back too? I know that narrow tires are better in snow. thanks

No - use the same size with a 17" wheel.
Hopefully, the link below will show you the currently available non-summer tires available in the recommended 205/50/R17 size from Tire Rack.

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Compar...t=All&x=87&y=8

There should be more info on wheel/tire combos from them in a few months.

Thanks Tom, some more dumb questions:

So the drop from 18" stock to 17" helps with snow too?

And what's the debate between 205/50/R17 or 225/45/17. Which is the better size for snowy VT driving?

And what about the "VR" rating vs "V" or "Q" rated ?:iono:

THANKS!!
ps; Tire rack has $126 "closeout price" on 205/50VR17 XL Bridgestone Blizzak LM-25 Blackwall right now.

As I'm in MD, not New England, you might want to call Tire Rack and ask them for suggestions for your particular situation.

Having had both Q and V rated winter tires, I can say that the Q rated rubber was better in the snow, but made the handling much less secure on dry pavement. As the V rated Dunlops I now have are fine in anything up to about 4~5", I'm quite happy with them for our mild winters.

All other things being equal, a 50 series tire should give better winter traction than a 45 series, just as a 17" tire will be better than an 18". Also, there is less chance of wheel damage from potholes, etc. with the smaller diameter wheels - I use 16" steel wheels on my E46, but they won't fit the 135i.
