AMSOIL
Any thinking of using AMSOIL 5W-40 European Car Formula in their 135? It seems like this particular oil was formulated with the N54 specifically in mind (not claiming that it was though). The link below states that its ideal for engines with the following characteristics: European, turbo charged, high revving, operate at high temperatures and have extended service intervals. Oh, and it's also specifically recommended for BMW engines. Am I the only one that thinks this could be the perfect oil for our cars?

^^ I put motorcycle-specific AMSOIL in my Ducati superbike and it made my bike run 50 degrees higher. After 1 ride I dumped it out and replaced it with motorcycle Mobil 1. Immediately the bike was running at normal temps again. I'll NEVER buy any AMSOIL product ever again.

Don't know about Amsoil, but since my dealer's price for 5w30 BMW branded synthetic is about the same as Mobil 1 on line, I'll stick with the BMW.

I'm a big fan of Mobil 1 0w40. My M52 engine has over 150k miles and I opened the valve cover yesterday. Everything is still shiny and the cams looked polished with no wear or scores at all. Not even a hit of sludge.
I bought 2 boxes of Amsoil 5w40 so I'll be giving that a try for my next 3 to 4 oil changes.

Mobil 1 makes one oil thats a true synthetic...It might be 0W40 but not quite sure. The others are quasi-synthetic like the BMW Castrol.
The 0W30 "German Castrol" is better than either of those and you can usually find it at Autozone. |

That specific oil is only found at the Bimmer dealer in the US.
In Europe you can buy it off the shelf. It's called "Castrol Softec 5W30 TXT" if memory serves. It's not that special or particularly outstanding according to the oil geeks. |

I wasn't recommending it for the 135i. I had used it in the past on my Civic Si.

Autozone usually stocks the German Castrol that is favored by many at bobstheoilguy.com. Be careful to follow the instructions to determine if it is actually GC.

Had an oil shop do it with me standing over them. If you are taking it to BMW I'd use their oil. |
