My feeling is most drives are going to require a power adapter. I am getting a 16 or 32gb flash stick, much easier to bring in and out of the house and update, and my DRM stuff is going on a 4GB ipod nano (1st gen). You can get a 32GB stick for about $150, 16GB are around $50 (in the US). |

There is a cut off regarding the power adapter, for example, if the hard drive pulls too many amps to spin and run the disc, you will need a power adapter that most likely will plug into the cigerette lighter. But, if the hard drive doesnt pull too much amperage, then the USB connection will be enough to power it. I am thinking those WD drives might be low enough to be powered by the USB port alone...you will need to find out how much power it draws, and how much power the stock BMW head unit puts out through USB...(I found this information on my Sony head unit I bought as an upgrade to my stock CD/radio, maybe BMW's stock radio has the same info, anyone know?)
If the HD works via USB only on your PC, will this mean it will work via USB only on y our car's radio head unit? |

USB spec is 2.5 watts (5V @ .5 amps), which isn't enough to power 99% of the 2.5" laptop drives that are usually used in the USB travel drives. Some are 1.8", which will work. These usually top out at 100GB. Some USB ports exceed the spec, and will work. We don't know how much power the usb port on the bimmer puts out yet and how it handles overdraw. Some drives just need a little extra juice to spin up and may be tolerated by the port. I'll plan to post on this when I get my car. |

I have been told the USB port on the BMW is only powerful enough for a 4200rpm HD... I am no expert but I wanted to pass this on...

Are 1.8" HDs 4200 rpm and not 5400 rpm? I think 80-100 GB for a HD for music would be sufficient, especially comparing its cost to that of an ipod. I havent researched it much, but thanks for posting the info here again (and again, and again heh)

The "classic" iPods have 1.8" hard drives in them. They usually draw under 2 watts. |

Hmm I did a search online but could not find out what the wattage of the WD hard drivers is. from this link it suggests that the 120 GB portable HD is a notebook HD that uses 2 watts, which should work (dont know about the 160 GB HD). Can anyone confirm the wattage?

Ok did some more searching and found this WD Spec sheet (for 60-120 GB HDs). On the second page, it lists External Power (optional) as 5V 1.0 amp, which would be 5 Watts, so when we find out the power out put of the BMW USB connection well know if the WD drives will work.

I'm really amazed at people needing 160 gb of music in there car. I have the ipod adapter on my E46, using a 8 gb ipod nano, and I still haven't filled it up after 2 years.
Granted, some of that is because I only put on individual tracks, not whole albums. And this is the first-gen adapter that only allows 6 playlists (as it pretends to be the six-disc changer). I imagine having access to virtually unlimited playlists with the ipod adapter in the 1er will result in me putting more music on it. But still, 160 gb is 20 times the capacity of my 8 gb nano that I'm challenged to fill up now. |
