Power steering problem.

I have a 2011 328xi and the steering feels like a tire is low. The steering is hard in the morning when I first drive the car in the moring then gets a little better later in the day. I don't know if the outside temperature is affecting it or not. The pump dosent make any noise and the fluid is OK. Has anyone ever had this problem?

Thank you

Yeah, I think cold temperatures can affect power steering fluid and make it somewhat thicker, causing increased steering effort in the morning. Also, as the fluid warms up throughout the day and it can become more responsive.

Maybe siphon out as much of the old as you can and add fresh fluid? Do that a couple times till you've gone through the full liter of new. Can't hurt!

Does anyone know if there's a filter in the reservoir on this year?

It's integrated, so you need to replace the entire reservoir. It's a good idea to do that, but just changing out the fluid has to be an improvment.

If it's hard, easy, hard, easy as you turn the wheel. The u joint in the steering shaft may be binding and the culprit. If so spraying some penetrating oil then ATF on them may help free it up. I've done this on several of my BMW's and it works.

That's how it feels. I will try that before doing the power steering. I will replace the fluid and
reservoir if that dosent work.

Thanks for the help

I sprayed down the steering sector and the steering feels better now. I'll probably have to replace it soon.
