18" Front Tire Size for 135i

Perhaps Gill or others can shed some light...

Seems 225/35/18 is a better option than the 225/40/18 for conventional rubber selection??? The OEM tires (front and rear) outer tire diameters are both 24.7". the 225/35 outer diameter is 24.2" and the 225/40 is 25.1". Both the 225/35 and 225/40 use wheel widths 7.5~9". Both 225/35 and 225/40 have 9" tire sections and 7.7" tread width. And the 225/35 usually weighs a pound+ less than the 225/40. In the case of the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 the 225/35 weighs 3 pounds less!

Unless someone has a reason why you shouldn't use the 225/35 front, then it seems it's the best option when going to a 18x8 or 18x8.5 front wheel, or until better tires are offered for the 18x7.5 OEM fronts.

Note: Schnitzer uses 225/40 all around on their wheel combos (18x8.5). My desire would be to have the same outer diameter tire front and rear, or a slightly smaller outer diameter front. But the 225/40 front with the OEM rear makes the outer diameter bigger on the front...which is what seems odd and the reason for the post.

Balls - I think revolutions per mile on the 225/35/18 are around 859 and on the stock rear around 840. I'm thinking along the same lines as you - going with a 225/35 front when the RFTs are worn slick.

I'm sure either way will work fine. It will end up being driver preference. I'm choosing 225/40/18 and 255/35/18 for a few reasons.

1. Much better tire selections than the standard sizes.

2. The overall diameter is a bit higher rather than lower. I don't want anything on there that increases the appearance of the fender gap. The smaller the OD of the tire the more this becomes relevant.

3. I personally value the wider rubber, front and rear, that this provides. It's a visual thing for me.

^^ That would work (25" OD rear vs. 25.1" OD front). However, the 255/35 is 2 pounds heavier than the 245/35 when using the same Goodyears as example.

2 pounds for 10 mm? That last 10 mm must be made of lead!

Is it possible that the the 255 is Run Flat and the 245 is not?

I am leaning to 225/40 myself and maybe 255/35 rear.

Those sizes will fit on the OEM 18" wheels, correct?

The difference is the load rating. None are runflats. And the 225/40 and 255/35 in the GS-D3 example have much higher load ratings than required, hence the higher tire weight. Personally I'm not opposed to the higher load rating, but if not necessary then you're getting a heavier tire and typically paying more for it too. In addition, the weight differences in GS-D3 between the 225/40 (XL) and 225/35 fronts is 3 pounds per tire. Both are XLs. The 225/35 is the lighter one of course at 21 pounds. Anyway it just goes to show there's more to consider and each manufacturer may vary depending on the load rating of a given tire. Doesn't appear the 135i requires a XL tire as the OEM load ratings are 85 F and 88 R. but perhaps that's because they're runflats????

I think the best solution is to use 225/40 all around, preferrably on 8" or 8.5" wide wheels for both F and R. And the 225/40 can be used on the OEM wheels all around too.
