The general consensus is that NAV isn't worth it (Maybe unless Logic 7 comes with it...), the I-Drive stinks, and the storage bin will not be on the dash if you don't get Nav.

I have to seriously think about dumping the Nav.... ASAP....

Sure we all like fast, great brakes and nimble handling. But a modern car has simply has to have modern techonology, like navigation.

The only saving grace in that department is that BMW has partnered with Garmin to have well designed BMW specific dashboard mount for their Nuvi units that also conceal the wires.

This is a particularly good solution if you have multiple cars. Also, GPS devices improve and gain in functionality rather quickly, so it makes it easier to upgrade the navigation without having to do major surgery to the car.

cheap ($200-500)
can be moved from car to car, or walk around with it in cities
can be used overseas
you're not stuck with it for the life of the car
updates are cheaper

no brainer, to me. of course, i don't need a gps every day like some people do.

I dont dig the pop-up nav screen BMW uses on this car and dont see myself paying for it. If you've ever had nav in a car before you'll know for yourself if it's something you really care about having. My Acura had it and it was a neat bit of eye candy for passengers to play with, but I rarely needed it.

No way I'm going to have that damn screen open everywhere I go. No way I'm spending a dime on a damn nav system that the nav in my phone will trump.

I don't love anything that can't or won't love me back, and I advize people to take the same approach.

The 1er still has its shortcomings, my build is at $43K and I'm still very much dissatisfied with the dashboard and general ergonomics at that price level (especially the instrumentation). And there's still no spare tire. I know it falls hard on alot of peoples ears around here, but I'd probably have more fun in a Volkswagen Eos with the VR6. That's because I'd rather go to the drive-in, or for a ride with the top down in the country with my girlfriend, than tear my car up autocrossing it or racing some ricer.

The trouble with that kind of technology is how quickly it gets outdated. Look at the NAV units in cars from 5 years ago. Absolutely horrible! But you're stuck with 'em, even if the rest of the car maintains its appeal.

The top end stereo is a separate upgrade, it has nothing to do with the Nav. The i-drive may control both nav and stereo on the same screen but apart from that they are independent systems. If you don't get the i-drive and the nav system then there will be a storage bin in the dash, this bin takes the spot where the i-drive screen sits. In Australia you can get the navigation system without the screen or i-drive it gives directions via voice and read out on the instrument cluster.

Nav's from years ago, the E46's included, were outdated because they physically didn't work properly. I can't see buying any car that doesn't have NAV, its basically going to ruin your residual, as well as its really useful despite they high price tag. I-Drive got a lot of initial complaints, buts actually not that badly done.

american cars do not get the storage bin.

I recently bought a AT&T Tilt phone, that has built in-GPS. I loaded TomTom on it, along with North American maps. Now I have maps with voice directions wherever I am.

My wife had iDrive envy, as her Audi doesn't have Nav. I bought her a Samsung Blackjack II phone at the same time, and loaded GPS software on it. How she also has Nav in her pocket(book) any time she needs it.

As infrequently as I really need navigation, this suits me fine.

That phone came pre-loaded w/Tele-Nav right? Did you try that system at all?

No. I had TomTom 6 already from a prior PDA. Tele Nav is $9.99/mo. I got TomTom about a year ago for $39 from a website price mistake. :smile:

Tele Nav seems like a pay version of software very much like Windows Live Mobile, which I also have installed. It's great because it also tells me cool things like local gas station's current prices, movie times, traffic updates, etc... (and that app is free).
