Dinan 135i

My wife went to our BMW dealership yesterday to have our 3-series serviced, so I asked her to talk to our sales guy about the 135i, M3 and any other 1-series variants (M1, tii, etc.). Our sales guy suggested that rather than getting an M version (or tii) of the 1-series, we should seriously consider buying a 135i with a Dinan software upgrade. He said the upgrade costs $2000, matches the BMW warranty and can be serviced by our dealership. The results are impressive: 384 horsepower (@ 5700 RPM) and 421 lb/ft of torque (@4300 RPM). So, for around $40,000, I can get a great-looking BMW that will perform comparably to a new M3 ($60,000). Amazing -- I might actually get rid of my Cayman for one. Any thoughts?

By the way, the 1-series brochure does not include the "lemon" interior; instead, it has "taupe."

I have been tempted by this as well and I have a estimated completion date of 11 Feb. I think I am going to drive it a while and see if I can live with 300 horsepower first.

It is very tempting; but, I really want to put miles on it and determine that it is trouble free before adding more stress.

My AW 135i will be equipped with the sports package and the DINAN ECU.

I'm definitely going with the Dinan product! looking forward to it. You can read a little about it at their site.

I find it unbelievable that you cannot purchase a Dinan badge until you rack up "10 points' worth of Dinan performance parts. Who the hell do these idiots think they are making people earn the privilege of advertising for them by spending upwards of 10k in parts. This should be free to any customer.

I tell you what. I bet I can have that badge reproduced or find it on ebay for a couple of dollars.

If I ever get a badge you can have it. I don't put them on. My mopar stage one and stage two badges are on a laptop 500 miles away. But since dinan matches the warranty and you can still go to bmw service I'd be on so fast.

well a couple of things: 1) i think dinan badging is stupid; however, putting their trademark on the car should mean something .... it is their form of advertisement so i can understand them not wanting to be misrepresented performance wise. that said, badging is still lame :-)

I also plan on driving my 1 for awhile to see if I can live with just 300/300 but I definately see a down the road ECU upgrade. Sometimes I feel like an addict because with every car I promise the wife I won't change a thing but the mods always start.

I understand your frustration with Dinan requiring 10 pts before you get a badge, however I remember reading that Dinan cars actually have a higher resale value. So maybe they require the 10pts before offically becoming a Dinan car and thus higher resale value. JMO

I read all about it, got all excited, then saw at the bottom it's only 49 state emissions legal.

i would double check the warranty when using dinan stuff on newer bmws. Dinan and Bmws relationship has lost its lusty w bmw so they don't advertise they carry dinan products. The dealer here has only whatever dinan stuff that was left over. after its all gone. No more dinan stuff from the dealer

The dealer is the one who handed me the flyer detailing the performance advantage.

Not true for all dealerships, my local dealer will remain a Dinan partner.

hence why i said double check...he may know dinan will sell parts for the 1, but how will the warranty work. Typically dinan parts carry their own warranty on their products while, you retain the factory warranty on the rest of the car. but what if a dinan part fails and causes a bmw part to fail, but you can't prove this caused that.. then what do u do?

makes it even the wiser to double check and get the specifics on how the warranty would be handled if you couldn't get to an authorized dinan dealer.

I would get through the run-in process before I started hot-rodding, but I can see how including it into the financing could be appealing.

Btw there is an horror story for 335i Dinan user on e90post. The jist is Dinan blames BMW and BMW blames Dinan for the problem and the owner paid out of pocket. Just because Dinan promises original BMW warranty it doesn't mean it's worry free.

Any link? I remember reading a thread about a person who had Dinan mods done, and there was a bunch of finger pointing (and the owner wound up paying), but I don't remember it being a 335i. Is this another similar story?

I don't doubt this happened, but I was curious to read that thread too.

I will be getting a Dinan flash ASAP after 2000 miles. As far as 10 Dinan points go, you really do not need all the Dinan stuff other cars need like big brake kits, Oil coolers, etc. I think they will lower that for the 1 series.

must not have been a Roush dealer, even non-SVT dealers refuse to work on SVT cars...
