The love/hate again ....
June 2010 F10 535i 217,000km and it need$ work, work and now more work.
Had the valve cover and gasket replaced, it stopped the burning oil smells. Had oil getting into the coolant (photos show the horror), so replaced most of the cooling system hang-ons, including engine oil cooler parts, didn't replace the radiators. Still had coolant loss and the peanut butter. Replaced the transmission oil cooler, peanut butter is now gone. Now the car left me stranded in a carpark, no crank, no start, "Ignition fault" sometimes displayed. Towed to my Indy via a rear wheels lifting tow-truck, you all know why. It's his trouble now, and al$o mine. I can see a new starter motor coming. The car was intermittently not starting until the second press of the START button, but now its a very heavy German Paperweight. He can also see where the fresh blue coolant is leaking from the very right front of the car, perhaps the aux-radiator or hoses. I've had enough. As said in the Title, this is my second BMW love/hate car, and both have been a 5-series. |

Those pictures are nightmare fuel!
Along with the starter and cooling system problems, you're due for suspension refresh. Those all sorta' fall into regular maintenance items, but some money you're going to have to put out. Better than a new car payment? That's a call you'll have to make. I'd get the starter done and then sell it private party. Nobody is going to want to buy it if it doesn't run, so the starter would be a good investment to get top dollar for it. Would you sell private party or trade in? If you'd trade it in, maybe don't bother as they won't give you anything either way. Tough spot, sorry to see. |

There is still some love for this car so I'm keeping it. The engine is solid, the last '96 E39 528i M52 engine had two heads crack the same cylinder to cooling channels so I finally put that one out to a wrecker, a great feeling. This F10 still ticks all the boxes for me apart from the reliabilty box, at the moment, but maintenance will fix that.
It also looks so good. Thanks for your comments. |
