Top speed limit (elec.) on the 135i

Hi All -

I thought I had read somewhere that the stock top speed limiter on the 135i would be 150 mph. Anyone know the correct answer? :iono:

If you get the sports package it is. Otherwise it's 130mph without ZSP.

Check out page 14's footnote on this document.

Nah that is just for the sports package on the 128i, cause the car needs the sports suspension to safely do 150. The 135i now has a top speed of 150, sports package or no sports package. Just check the specs page on bmwusa.com for both the 128i and 135i.

I suppose it depends on how one reads it. If you notice on the same page it lists the top speed of the 135i as 150mph and 130mph for the 128. The way I read the footnote is that if you take the sport package on the 128i with "proper" tyres then the limiter is raised to 150, but it is standard at 150 on the 135i.

In the SA brochure, the 135i is listed as being limited to 250km/h (156mph) with no mention of having to have the sport package to get this.

Here's another BMW USA document that states the ZSP for the 135i is what increases the top speed limit. The 135i section is the second page.

This document makes it appear that you cannot even get the increased speed limit on the 128i at all.

Yes, I know, conflicting information to the other document...

Who knows what to make of the info - there seems to be so many anomolies in the information supplied by BMW, which is rather shoddy . I mean how hard can it be to supply consistant information.

Using the configurator, if you choose the no-cost option of the 17 inch wheel with all-season tires, you are forced to remove the Sport Package from the 135i, thusly get top-speed limited to 130mph.

this came up a while ago, i'm sure this has been discussed twice before, and both times i argued that the 135i came with 150mph limiter from factory BUT the same documents above showed me that this wasn't the case, the speed limiter is increased on the 135i with the ZSP package to 150mph and is set at (IMHO) a very low 130 mph, really it's just another reason why the ZSP package is worth the 1000 bucks.......

I'm not sure I've ever dared to go 130mph, except for maybe once in a fit of stupidity when was 21 or so...much less a buck fifty.

Right around 85 and I start getting very concerned for my insurance premiums:biggrin:

Hmmm - I'm glad I brought it up, because I had heard it both ways as well.

I really don't want to order the sports package (I'll be removing the front seats and steering wheel anyway), but I will need the 150 mph speed limiter. I guess the shadow line trim will look better than the chrome look as well.

On the other hand, I guess I wouldn't have that much trouble unloading the manual sport seats and steering wheel.

Without the speed limiter in place, what do you guys suppose the top speed on the 135i would be?

Somewhere around 170 mph would be my guess - the 1er is a pretty upright car with a higher CD than the 3er coupe, IIRC. I suspect that it'll run out of steam well before 175.

I was able to get a 335i up to 145MPH in fourth gear at VIR with a little more to go before serious braking was needed, so with two gears to go and the right stretch I bet 175-180 could be possible, but hugo is right, I think the 135i will have more drag at high speed than the 335i.

1er = .33 Cd
3er = .30 Cd (Both Coupe and Sedan)

Combine that with only 300hp (in stock trim) and I wouldn't be surprised if neither could hit 170. Remember folks, BMW's have some of the most delusional speedometers this side of a sport bike. The faster ones easily top 170 indicated up against the limiter at ~155 actual speed.

That said...bimmers do have some kind of magic that allows them to perform beyond expectations...

Mods?

That is seriously flying. You sure about that? What did Car and Driver hit on the main straight in their 335i test? (maybe it was road and track).

135i top speed depends on TIRES

The 130 MPH speed is due to all season tires that are standard on the 128i and optional on the 135i. The 135i comes standard with performance tires (see pg 11 of the brochure). That's why pg 14 of the brochures states 150 MPH for the 135i.

True, true. In the 330's or so, right? I don't remember where I saw that but it rings a bell. In any case the first thing that comes to mind for a reference point is 5th Gen corvettes that go 170-175 with ~350hp and .29 Cd. Subtract 20hp and increase drag....170 still looks rather questionable, no? Heck just turning on the pop-up headlights takes 5mph off the C5's top speed.

The Procede doesn't although I think you can unnofficially get it removed. I think it is a liability thing.

And the limits are set because of the tire rating - that has been mentioned.
