Engine died and wont start

2013 328i Driving on the highway, the engine shutoff, no warning, no lights, no messages. It went into neutral and allowed me to coast to the shoulder. When I tried to start it, tranny shifted to park. No when I try to start it, I get 1 click and a message that say starter/ignition. I used my generic odb reader and it shows no codes. Battery is 11.7v. I tried to jump start, sounds like it is trying to turn for brief second, then same message. I can't find my Carly to check all modules more thoroughly, smoldering another one. Any suggestions to check in the meantime while I wait for the new code reader? I am thinking alternator, but should be able to jump start it still, correct?

If your alternator died, I would think you would still have some power from the battery. The fact that it went into neutral indicates that there was some power.
