135i like the old (E30) M3?

Quote from Car Connection:

If and when you do saddle in for a ride in the M3, count on a very different experience from the gnatty buzz of the first one and the slicker, suaver second and third-gen cars.

And if you need a fix for the old-style M3, wait for the new turbo-six 1-Series we'll drive early next year.

Sounds like they are looking to the 135i to bring back some of the fun of the original smaller and lighter sportscars (new E92 M3 is more fast grand-tourer than sportscar now). Hope they're right!

This is what I'm hoping for,.. when I first saw the e92 coupe, I immediately thought to myself "wow, nice 6-series." The 3 is all grow-ed up now and the enthusiast needs a replacement.

I hope so. Still a bit hefty for the track (600 lbs more than E30 M3) and hopefully they'll get that electric power steering to deliver some feel and feedback...

I'm really hoping they can pull it off! I wonder if they're worried about pulling it off too well and stealing sales from their more profitable cars (hence the electric power steering, no LSD, etc.)?

I don't think it will come close for that one, simple reason: weight. I sure miss the light cars of old. Additionally I don't think BMW will make it as raw. It will probably be like the 335--quite quick, and still fun, for sure, but a bit too serious about itself.

Hopefully we will see a road/track test of the car soon.

I hope so but I'm getting the feeling the car might be a little front heavy suiting it better for drag racing than road racing.

The E30 M3 was a low production model. World-wide there were 17,970 produced. There were only 5,000 imported into the US. The E30 M3 is also the most winningest BMW, winning over 1500 races. The 135i will never be as rare as the E30 M3 nor have the history of it.

I don't really care much about that (I have a 911 if I fret about race history) - I just want it to be fun & involving to drive.

We know it will post good performance numbers (especially when chipped), but FUN is the one thing we won't know til we drive one...

The 135 will be able to keep up step for step with the E30 ///M. But the E30 ///M is like no other.......it has an awesome pedigree and has a cult following like the Mini. But there will be a huge enthusiast market for the 1 and it's going to steal alot of thunder from the sport compact segment even though it's not classified as a sport compact. BMW got it right with this one.

E30 ///M3 + S52 = UBER Performance

I just hope it's fun to drive. I know it's unfair, but I'm going to be comparing it to my old S2000 which was a blast to drive. I'm short so I hope the seating position is good, too. On paper it sounds like a blast to drive, but I'll know when I drive it if I can bond with it.

Since BMW themselves present the 1 series is the new version of the 2002, I always thought the 135i as the new 2002 Turbo
