Hold out hope for a factory hardtop option like with the E46s. I loved the look of my M3 Vert with the hardtop and no B-Pillar

I have heard on various forums about problems with a softtop, such as getting slashed, easy to break into, etc. However, I talked to a fair number of people in my area with softtops that drive them year-round (including Northeast winters) and they have not had any problems, including vandalism. Previously I was only looking at hardtop convertibles but after speaking to a number of people I am also considering softtops, and therefore the 1-series. I was wondering if you could elaborate on your statement that ragtops are trouble, in case I have not considered something?

I've owned a Miata for about 8 years - it's not a power top but nevertheless was well engineered to raise and lower quickly by hand. It has a glass rear window with defroster (you don't want plastic) and decent weather seals. I am now seeing an occasional drip aroud the driver's window seal in hard rains but other than that it's held up well.

PS - there are a couple of other things worth mentioning about convertibles. They bring into play sensations you don't normally get with closed cars. I live in a fairly hilly area and go through temperature gradients going up and down the hills. You sense that in a convertible with the top down. The other thing is you smell everything, BBQ, french fries, dead skunks; anything that causes an odor, rushes past your nose - whereas in a closed car it may be filtered out.

I mean i guess it depends on where you live at....there are always jealous people and people who like to vandalise and there's always going to be that crazy ex-girlfriend or boyfriend. Otherwise leaks and such....i don't know. I'm not a big fan. Sorry to offend anyone if i have

I have only ever had soft top verts (over 10 in my lifetime) and have never had a problem with any of them.
I ruled out a lot of verts recently as replacements for my Z4 (including the 3-series and upcoming A5 Cabrios) because they have hardtops.
Besides looking dorky, they always cut into trunk space...

I hope its a hard top--this makes the car look so much better IMO when the top is up--always thought that ragtops looked "weak" for some reason. Just my $.02.
