No Automatic for 135i (see the brochure's technical data part)
Unfortunately, only the 120d seems to be available in automatic. You can see this because only the 120d has the [automatic] [numbers] [inside] [the] [typical] [bmw] [square brackets], while there are no number for the 135i, meaning that there is no automatic, and this means there will probably no paddle at the steering...
Why? There are many possible reasons: - For a fact the automatic transmission is bigger than the manual, maybe with the turbo it would not fit. - The turbo's temperature could damage the automatic - Maybe the automatic transmission that can handle the amount of torque for this engine, is larger and does not fit. - Maybe just want to force this sort of clients to by a 330i? If anybody knows the real reason, please share it! |

Also, is this not a derivation of the E9x platform? The 335, has no problem fitting the AT.

80% of all 3ers sold in the US are slushies. That would be financial suicide for them to not have the step tranny in the 135i. They've already done all the R&D on the engine/ tranny combo too...
I think it's just an omission. |

The info is from the UK brochure. The US is a very different market. The 128i is sure to have an AT available as on option. While it's possible that an AT might not be available on 135i, I suspect that we'll see one on it too.

This has happened before in the US. The M Roadster only came in a manual. The factory told a group of us that there wasn't room for the AT.

Maybe they just want to aim it more at a sport minded driver, who would never personally own a sports car in an autoloader.

Another proof that it might not have AT...
Beside having it mention somewhere else, where BMW mentions the 135 with manual in such a ways as THE only option, without actually saying only, is that all pictures were BMW loves to show the shifters in the steering wheel for the 130i, it just hasn't been the case in any pict for the 135i...
Maybe it is true that BMW thinks about it as an sporty "M1" without actually putting the M on it, so thats why in its head they don't bother finding a automatic that fits.... actually 400nm of torque, is a lot of torque, and really means not a tiny Box for it.... and the Series-1 already has had problems of limited space for feet regarding the lack of space in this behalf... BTW: I love Automatics and wish, please BMW to come with a solution!!! (and I NOT going to buy neither a manual, nor a 330i to get an Automatic!!). |

I know, but there is no way they won't offer an automatic here. Most of the people here have driven automatics all their life. I think he was referring to the UK market
