Arrow Graphical Size Comparison - E46 Coupe vs. 135

Just for fun, I decided to graphically compare the side views of the 135 Coupe and the E46.

I scanned the side view out my E46 Coupe’s owners manual (in black), then scaled up the image from the 135 Coupe’s brochure to match (in red), and overlaid it so the front wheels are in the same spot.

Some interesting differences for the 135:

- wheelbase and trunk just about split the overall reduction in length.

- both windshield and rear window more upright, trunk opening ends up about the same.

- significantly higher hood, belt line, and of course overall height.

I guess the higher hood is partly due to the new pedestrian safety regs in Europe that specify a minimum crush distance.

very cool.

assuming things are reasonably to scale that really gives me an appreciation for the size of the car. not too small.... just right for me. i'm pleased!

thats not small at all. ive always loved the size of the e46 so this wont be that much of a difference. i was assuming it would be like a whole trunk length shorter lolz. thx and good job

it would be cool to see this from the front/back perspective too. hint hint.

although that might be harder to scale?:iono:

Heh-heh, "reasonable" considering the small size of the 135 brochure image and the limitations of PhotoShop, i.e. within a few percent I think. If anyone happens to have an AutoCAD file of the 135, I could do something more accurate.

Not too much to see, the overall width is pretty close (the 135 body is 9mm narrower, but front and rear tracks are wider). The only differences big enough to stick out are the overall heights you see in the first post.

Could the scale still be ever so slightly off?

I think a similar comparison to the e92 may hurt a lot of people's feelings as that puppy adds another 4 inches to the e46.

Thanks again for doing that, that is a great comparison of two great cars.

Quite possible! I think the likely range of error is about the thickness of the wider red lines. Of course, I'm also assuming that the source images I had to work with were accurate to begin with.

Me too. My guess is that because the 135 is taller as well as shorter (and has a higher beltline) the proportions appear more "stubby" to the eye than the overlay suggests.

Wow - such a miniscule difference - makes me wonder why BMW bothered... could have just re-introduced the the E46 at a substantially lower price point, just as VW re-introduced the previous gen Golf as the City Golf in Canada this year, selling it at a big discount alongside the current model. I was hoping for something a little closer to Mini-sized - say previous-gen Civic.

I agree the Mazda 3 sedan looks short, due to its stubby rear deck and its disproportionate height. But it does have a longish front hood and overhang, and as it is longer than the E46 (4540mm vs 4488), it's not my idea of a short car.

Hold your fire - you realise that the 1-er has been scaled up in the red pic? (well I think that was the meaning!)

4239mm 1er hatch
4345mm E30
4360mm 1er coupé
4433mm E36 coupé
4492mm E46 coupé
4580mm E92 coupé

So it's almost exactly the length of an E30, admirably compact in my book.

that's another great comparison. A difference of 15mm or equivalently 1.5cm. that's nothing. I LOVED the size of my old E30 ... it just fit like a glove. To see this just makes me start getting excited all over again!

but the width of an e46, averaging all of it's dimensions it's closest to an e36 overall or to an e46 compact.
