Looking for itineraries for PCD drive back to NYC

Hi,

I'm pickup my X3 at PCD soon and will be driving it back to NYC. I have 3-4 days planned.

So far I'm planning to stay at Asheville, NC after picking up the car. Then the next morning will drive to peak of Mt Mitchell. Then couple days later probably visit Monticello and Shenandoah Caverns. What can I do in between?

Did anybody do the same road trip and can share their itinerary?

Thanks!

Are you planning to visit Biltmore in Ashville? It's quite a place and worth seeing while you're there.

Yea, I will be visiting Biltmore either the first night or early next day morning.

My gut response would be to hit every brewpub along the way, but given that you’ll be driving your new X that’s probably not a good idea

Good plan is to run the whole Tail Of The Dragon - Cherohala Skyway Loop

The Dragon section is only 11 mile long & will take 30 minutes plus or minus.

Been there, done that, got the T-Shirt @ Tail Of the Dragon/Killboy gift shop in Deals Gap.

Cool overnight stay Dragon City Resort (formerly Dragon Pit Inn) right on the Dragon.

Another vote for Tail of the Dragon, if you're looking for a fun drive more than things to do outside the car. Wife and I drove back to CT in March and that was the first stop after an all-secondary roads approach with some great mountain passes just getting to TOD.

Then we went up the I-81 corridor to Staunton, VA and drove the Skyline Drive from Waynesboro to Front Royal. After that we transitioned to more primary routes to visit our daughters in Philadelphia and Hoboken.

Tail of the Dragon is way out of the way and you'll still be in the break-in period. But, if you do go there, stay at the Snowbird Lodge if you can and see the Joyce Kilmer Forest.

In Asheville, I'd stay at the Grove Park Inn vs the Biltmore, but at the Biltmore, take the Behind the Scenes tour if you can.

Is tail of the dragon even worth doing? Tight hairpins are not exactly the X3s forte.

I've never been to it, but if you have a heavily trafficked road (and possibly heavily policed), perhaps add in some reckless drivers, and that's a recipe for annoyance.

I looked at it this way - living in CT, I never thought I would have the chance to drive TotD. Yes, it's a bit out of the way coming back from Spartanburg, but we were a helluva lot closer to it than we were likely to ever be. As for the road itself, being so packed with tight hairpins made it easier to enjoy it with the car right at the beginning of break in - there was no need to push it hard. It also wasn't crowded at all, being around dusk on a weekday. About the only traffic we encountered was some very impatient motorcycles.

Couldn’t think of a better idea or a more enjoyable road to visit/experience. And yes Asheville is very nice too. Can’t help you beyond that as my drive is the other direction down to miami lol
