Good to hear, but the new body style and engine have me a little worried.

I just hope that the BMW diesel engines are as long lasting as the MB diesels are...

is the US market ever going to get bmw diesels? a 135d would have me sold, but the 135i already does.

Someone mentioned in another post that we will be getting a diesel but that it will probably come over in the 5 series first, correct me if i'm wrong. This would probably mean we will eventually get a 1 series diesel, just not in the first year of production unfortunately.

Europe seems to be a very different standard when in comes to reliability compared to the US. Probably because they have the French and Italian cars to lower the expectation. Notice that among the cars mentioned are VW Golf, Audi A6, and Jaguar XJ. These cars don't do so well in the US reliability surveys like CR and JD.

I'm not saying that the 1 will be very unreliable, but I'm just saying that realistically it will most likely to be another BMW, at around industry average when it comes to problem per vehicle. Even this is a good thing, as not many european cars can say this.

And we have Chevy, Ford, and Dodge to screw with our bell curve.

Wow... a 135d would be a screamer, but I think that's it doubtful that BMW will drop the 6 cylinder diesel into the 1er. However, the 4 cylinder diesel 1er should be in the US eventually. It probably won't be the first model year (only the 128i and 135i have been announced for the US market), but 2009 or 2010 is a possibility. Maybe we should consider sending a petition to BMW showing that there is a market for the 1er diesel.

Speaking of reliability, I'm wondering how the twin turbo diesel in the 123d will fare over time? How has the 120d's engine done in regards to reliability? Unfortunately when it comes to diesels it's like the Dark Ages here in the US.

Most GM and Ford brand score much better in the CR reliability survey than MB and VW. The notion that American cars, and also Korean cars, are the worst in reliability is no longer true, but I'm sure it will persist for many more years, just as many people still believe MB's are built like tanks.

At least the MB diesels are built like tanks...they are like the energizer bunny, they keep going and going and going...
Heck, The Cummins power plant they put in Dodge PUs have been known to hit over 500K.

I guess the only question that comes to mind is...

"If you have a car that will go for say- 300K miles. Would you get bored?':iono:
