Recent CPO purchase - Coolant dirty.
Hi Everyone
I purchased a nicely loaded, CPO G05 M50i (2020) from a dealer in N Va with 43k miles. When I took it for MD state inspection the report indicated that the vehicle requires a coolant flush because the coolant is past it useful life and is very dirty. It also mentioned that the Differential Fluids should be replaced. I reached back out to the dealer but they are trying to side step by claiming that all CPO checklist checks were completed. I wrote a detailed email to the general manager and the pre-owned dept manager requesting that these two issues be addressed (also so I have documentary evidence if something went wrong in near future due to these two issues). No response from them yet. Any suggestions? Should I be reaching out to BMW USA? Thanks in advance for your responses. ps - If I cannot resolve this issue with the dealership then I will get this done on my own dime ofcourse. |

Your MD dealer is just trying to get money out of you. There is no 12k mile differential change. The X5M has a 50k mile change but for the X5 those are lifetime fluids. If you are concerned about the coolant I would take it someplace else to have it checked.

Thanks! Yes what you say could be true however, the MD inspection station was just a MD state inspection shop - they won't do the flush/refill - it was supposed to be advisory.
Just a few minutes after I posted this, GM from the dealership I purchased from responded back to bring the car in for service and they will take care of both the issues. Will update this thread after service appointment. |

Sounds good. They probably figure that might as well as this way you don't come back to them later on.

Am I understanding that MD state safety inspection looks at those things, and they would not pass the vehicle as a result? If that's the case, the dealer owes you a vehicle that passes your state's inspection, or they need to justify the case that those items are within the manufacturer's guidelines, and shouldn't be a state inspection criteria, at least for those models.
FWIW, the coolant could be contaminated and I'd be concerned as to why. But, there are tests that can be done to verify the freeze protection and the pH, which can be important to long-life. |

This is ridiculous that a state inspection department is getting into this. It's way beyond checking your brakes, lights, emissions, etc. With all the problems in Maryland, the fact that they're paying people to check your coolant is a joke.

The inspection fee did go up some to $149, but honestly in this case if these two items do require service then it would be money well spent. I called another shop (Indie) and if these indeed required flush/change I was quoted around $700.

Happy to report that the dealer came through with flying colors and changed the Differential Fluid and Coolant without issues. Happy with the outcome and kudos to the dealership - BMW of Fairfax in VA.
