CARB approved tune
Hi bimmerpost community, I am now the proud owner of a 2017 BMW 540i with an amazing B58, but also I'm a Socal resident which makes my tuning life full of pain.
In that post, I want to sum up all my knowledge about CARB-approved tunes. My first impression was: EVERYTHING IN ILLEGAL. - no downpipes passing inspection - no flash tune allowed So I have a few questions to California drivers 1. Is there JB4 only option we have left? 2. XHP transmission tune also fail inspection? 3. Have you found any way to have legal stage 2? Possibly my DRL modification also illegal |

You could probably just say your DRL are suffering from a BMW bug and you don't have $7K per headlight to fix it lol

So I’m very knowledgeable about the carb laws in SoCal. If you touch anything that has to do with emissions, it’s illegal. But the catch it’s all from a visual inspection from the officer. So if he cannot see it, like a tune, they won’t know. But I can assure you all downpipes are illegal, all intakes are illegal (unless it’s carb legal). Here’s another nugget, did you know it is illegal to drive your car in sport mode on the street. Please don’t ask how I know but I do trust. Now I’m speaking from about being visually inspected for a state ref. Most cops do not know what to look for but some do.

There are ways to get around this. Your car cannot be state inspected if it is registered in another state. Also california emissions laws no longer apply to you. There are states where you can register you vehicle without having a physical address in that state.
