Dont buy a helmet online. At least not until you physically went into a store to try it on. Helmet sizing is very tricky and the only way you'll really know what you need is to try it on in person. Go to places that sells helmets in your area and try them on, after you know what size or model you want, you can then order online.
Im not sure about autocross, but for road racing helmets, almost all the orgs require SA rated helmets. Some organizations will let you pass with SA2000 rated helmet, but in 1 year, they probably will require SA2005 or higher. So even though you may get a good deal on a SA2000 helmet, you might only be allowed to use it for 1 year. You might as well opt for SA2005 helmet so your good for another 3..4 years. Cliff notes: Try on a helmet in person before you buy. Try to buy SA2005 or higher rated helmet. |

It depends what you want i guess. Obviously open face will be cheaper then closed face. But as far as brands go, heres are a few of the more popular brands listed from most expensive, to cheapest
Arai, HJC, Bell, Pyrotect. There are also a few less known companies that make helmets as well that are significantly cheaper. It all depends on how much you feel your head is worth. Personally, i wouldnt skimp out on the only thing protecting your head. |

I need to find a lightweight helmet. My doctor says a conventional full faced helmet is not good for my broken neck and the metallic hardware. My buddy gave me some recommendations but they all seemed sorta heavy. You got any recommendations bro?

i own a bell m3 and absolutely love it. it has a carbon composite shell which is a little easier on your neck than traditional fiberglass helmets. you can't really put a price on your head, spend the extra dollars. they retail for abut $450-500.

Other equipment i would recommend for any track/auto-x junkie:
-a basic tool set -tire compressor - either plug in version, a portable air tank, or for someone with $, a compressed air system. -pyrometer -air gauge (get a quality one, other ones break and become inaccurate - 60psi should be accurate enough) on game day bring: -cooler with drinks (not beer ) -umbrella -rain coat -sunscreen -food -chair -painters tape and duct tape.... |

so ur helmet can wun swing forwards and backwards during acceleration/braking....and pose additional stress on your injured neck....it will also hold ur helmet during a collision so it wun swing forward and break ur neck....

I think autocross will also accept MA (2005) certified helmets. They are much less expensive. You should check. But it you plan to track then SA (2005) are the way to go...low cost ones go for about $200.

If you dont have a single hoop cage with a horizontal bar, the harnesses can compress your back in an accident. I would definitely get a padded collar though.

I have a Shoei RF-1000 DIABOLIC Large Helmet if your interested. Used for 1 track event, for 1 day, so basically wore it for a total of 60 minutes. I would go into a store first and try it out to make sure you like the size. Make me a reasonable offer and it's yours.
It's like new in box with all accessories, could pass for new. Here's a link to a new one on ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/SHOEI...Q5fMerchandise
