X3 Tailgate opening by itself when using the Jetwash

Has anyone else noticed that when cleaning the back of the car with a Jetwash that the tailgate opens by itself, as if I'd pressed the button that opens it? I don't think it's anything to do with pressing the button in my pocket, it's hard to imagine the water jet being powerful enough to press the button that's near the rear-view camera (but it's possible), and I don't have the feature where you can stick your foot underneath the bumper. Is it just me?

I already decided that next time I go I'll lock the car and put the key in a faraday pouch (that I already have) so that whatever I'm doing to trigger it to open should be ignored due to it being locked.

Are you SURE you don't have the kick under the car shit? You might be surprised

If not - go explore, try it without the key near. You could have discovered the new "jet-wash hack" :-)

I have comfort kick to open, but have never had an issue with the jetwash opening the tailgate even with the key in my pocket.

I suppose it's possible I do. It's something I tried the day I bought it (used) but I was kicking in the middle (like I did on my previous two cars, both Mercedes). It could be off-centre. I'll go look in the user guide pdf.

It'll be another week or two before I wash the car again but I expect with the car locked and the keyfob in a faraday pouch, whatever it is that's triggering it to open should be prevented
I used to have to use the pouch with a previous car because during the 5 minutes of washing the car, it would lock and unlock (with the mirrors folding and unfolding) about 20 times.

Turns out I do have that kick under the car shit. Jetwash/pressure-wash aimed around the lower/center part of the rear bumper seems to be getting confused with a kick gesture. It'll be lock-and-put-the-key-in-my-faraday-pouch procedure for next time at the car wash.

THat actually made me laugh - you have new technology so praise the Lord!! Both hands full of shopping? NO WORRIES you can kick to open much to the amusement of all those around you when you miss.

Don't miss.

:-)

p.s agree about the key - when I wash mine the water on the comfort handle switches locking/unlocking drives me cray. I usually leave the keys in the car to try to stop it.

BMW's use their voice-command technology with a special microphone at the back of the car. It will completely disregard the kick gesture whenever it senses more than one person and the owner say the words "watch this ...".

LMAO - and the LCI incorporated that video camera at the back to the AI that also if anyone was watching it wouldn't work.

The next gen has a slip mat underneath so when you lift one leg to kick you don't realise the new InvisoSlipMat(TM) gets pulled so you look like a complete dick on your ass. All filmed and instantly posted to one of those TV programmes (copyright BMW so they get the $$).
