Speed Camera and White Lines?
Got flashed last night, just *after* I went past a speed camera, ie. when I naievely thought, because I was well past the white calibration lines on teh road, I could speed up. It was a 30 zone, I went through the lines at about 25 then sped up, probably to around 40, at which point I saw the white flash.
Soes anybody know, what the range of these camreas is? I thought you had to be in the zone, ie. on the white lines, to get flashed. Apparently not. Sh1t! |

It's possible that the flash was for someone behind you, or that it was a dummy flash. Either way, if you don't get a letter in 14 days (assuming you are the registered keeper of your car) you are in the clear. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gatso |

Thanks, NFS. I did have a brief look on the web last night, but got conflicting info. Basically they don't need the white lines to determine speed, but they do need them to prove a case in court. Presumably that means they could still summons me (or hit me with a fixed penalty) and I would have to go to court and stand my ground?
The wort of it is, I had just come back fro a brief motorway trip, dropping a friend off home, at about 11.30pm, and I had deliberately not drunk any wine all night, unlike everybody else involved, so I could be nice and sober to give my freind a lift home. Then on the way back, just round the corner from my house, I get flashed. Yeah, it could have been someone else but I don't think there was anybody behind me. Might have been someone going the other way getting flashed, because the camera that may have got me was one of a pair. I suppose I always assumed that the white lines marked the danger area and once yuo were clear of them you could accelerate. |

Every chance it was someone going the other way - there are a couple of camera's in Stafford that flash oncoming trafffic if they are close to the white line and going a bit quick

I thought they stopped flashing cars that come the otherway, as it blinds drivers at night,

Ive been flashed over the years few times by a gatso on the other side of the road.
I dont think they can get you with no lines. You speed therefore trigger flash one, then how many lines you cover by the 2nd flash is whats used to calculate your speed, One flash i say your ok...

I can't count the number of times where I've slowed down for the 'white lines' then immediately accelerated again, and I never got flashed. What worries me is that although there were very few other cars about, and absolutely no pedestrians, it was a 30 mph zone and my 320D's 3rd gear acceleratino could easily have taken me up to 50 mph, so I could be facing more points... |

I've read that some of the cameras still flash vehicles coming in the opposite direction by accident.
I've also read about people who have been done outside of the white lines, although that seems to be against official guidance. All you can do is wait the 14 days with your fingers crossed. |

IMO the rear facing gatso are never supposed to flash for an oncoming car. I think there was an urban myth once that if you went towards them too fast they'd go off and nab you. Not saying the things can't and dont randomly get confused and go off.
Secondly doesn't it have to flash twice and take two pictures of you to prove the speed. Although the machine is quite capable of determining your speed without the lines I think they use this technique to avoid having to prove every gatso in the country is properly calibrated. If (big if) you were to get an NIP just ask for the pictures. No white lines then I believe you're laughing. I wouldn't worry about it myself but if you are have a look on www.pepipoo.com |

Don't need the white lines to prove speed asthey can use objects in the pic and measure the distance between them..... ie, when the road is dirty of the lines have faded away.

I regulary flash the gatso local to me when I drive on the opposite side, too fast. Its quite sensitive? Ive seen and done it in other areas too.
As far as I can remember, there has to be two flashes to calculate the speed. It is possibe to trip one flash if you accelerate quickly before the white lines end, ive done this too and panicked for 14 days. Not sure on getting done without the white lines, these are specificially calibrated for gatsos. You can however get 'done' by traffic cops using permanent road features, usually by their VASCAR system. I very much doubt they could do you without white lines on the road with a gatso camera. Its a horrible feeling waiting those 14 days........... |

I believe the UK has the most customer friendly painted Gatso cameras in the world. How can you miss these? In addition just about any detector will pick these up. My 1999 model valentine one does. (and is for sale... as it is hopeless on the real stuff - which is low power Multanova 6F radars hidden in dust bins).
