Smile 2008 x3 timing chain

as stated above 2008 x3 salvage car no warranty.in the business 30 years fullly equipped shop.just looking for some insight b4 I get into the job have fixed many bmw floods , hits etc. this one here had very lite front damage (no damage to reinforcement) pulled radiation etc to acess engine, changed positive battery cable, replaced serpentine belt. as I cranked over the engine I noticed the crank pulley was loose.chain did not jump.my thoughts are to set the crank on tdc (with tool thru bell housing) and check my cams are still aligned.I appreciate positive input because it seems as if there is not any written document to this procedure. all naysayers talking about salvage etc, sorry bout how you feel but to some of us its a way of life good or bad.thank you

Try XBimmers, X3World, Bimmerforums, Bimmerfest, or General BMW section...this forum is for E9x 3 series' and not E83 X3's.

Good luck!

i tried replying yesterday, but wasn't able to (damned internet connection!). anyway, in your situation, i'd invest in a factory service manual, or some type of diagnostic book, since you'll probably be doing much of the work yourself, and these vehicles are incredibly tricky.

keep in mind: the engine in your vehicle is an N52 engine, which is the same basic architecture as what came in the 128, 325, 328, 330, 525, 528 & 530 in the U.S. (the Euro versions got the N53, different cam timing technology all together). if you've ever got a question about that engine, look at other sources, because this board isn't too well travelled.

also, keep in mind that most of these vehicles are still under warranty, so very few people have torn into them, as much as a BMW Service Technician has, so a lay-person's opinion won't have much weight to it.

Now, if you wanted to talk about the finer points of disecting a 360ci Mopar engine, i'd be happy to talk to you!
