All rural roads in the Isle of Man (including most of the famous TT course) remain genuinely derestricted, however they do like tall hedges and stone walls over there.........oh and narrow roads lol.
Great place though. |

Seriously is there a car ferry thing from from manc or somthing to manx. Or are there just Giant rubber rings with Oars and the expect you to paddle through the sunroof.
Anyone know how much the ferrys cost , do i need a passport and any car docs

This is the ferry company, goes from Liverpool and Heysham
http://www.steam-packet.com/SteamPacket/Book-Now/ I looked for early march and got prices around £129 return for 1 car and 2 adults. You don't need a passport as long as you are coming from the United Kingdom and you don't need anything for your car. the 'no speed limits' apply when you go past an national speed limit sign but you can still get done for reckless driving and since 2005 anything you get done for on the Isle of Man applies to your UK licence. Don't know if many people get done for reckless driving though! I really want go never been before. |

The steam-packet has a monolpoly on the ferry routes, as such the prices aren't all that cheap. Crossings from Heysham are by conventional ferry and are sloooooow, whereas the summer crossing from Liverpool are by fast craft and take about half the time (2.5 hours). They are also bringing in a new fast craft with greater sea state capability and capacity (actually ex-US Navy). This is due into service at some point this year I think.
Officially the island is a country in it's own right, that just happens to have the Queen as head of state. As such they have their own laws (and taxation etc), so have maintained the national speed limit as derestricted. As said though they can do you for dangerous driving and have reciprocal agreement with the DVLA, so get a ban there and you'll be banned here as well. Your car insurance will most likely cover you (the usual, GB, NI, Isle of Man, Jersey and Gurensey). Additionally the island is covered by the NHS so you are covered medically as well. Currency is Sterling, but they do print / mint their own notes and coins, so you have to swap them at the bank or spend before leaving. Lovely place... there's a bunch of caterham bods who seem to go over every July (seen them two years in a row).
