Bad tires on a CPO?

Recently purchased a CPO x5 (3 weeks ago). I noticed a small leak in one of my tires so I took it to the shop today. They didn't see a nail, but they did measure the tread. They recommended that I should replace them soon as they're at a level 4.

So my question is… as a CPO vehicle shouldn't they come with a bit more life on the tires or is that not a req. for a CPO vehicle?

TIA

BMW CPO inspection says at least 3mm from the wear bar.

Edit: Wear bars are at 2/32" high which equates to 1.5875mm. Add that to the 3mm on top off the wear bar would give you 4.5875mm of depth which is approx. 6/32". If they are measuring 4/32" then they likely didn't meet specs for a CPO unless the specs have changed.

I've always negotiated a fresh set of tires when buying used or CPO vehicles. I take a look at both the date codes along with the thread depth. Nothing like buying a car and then having to dump a grand and a half on new tires.

When I got a CPO it came with new tires, battery and brakes. It was practically like a new car condition wise…

When I got a CPO, they said if it has less than 50% of its tire life left, they'll replace them. If 50% or more, they keep the old ones. Luckily for me, the treads were worn enough and they replaced all four for me.

I was in the similar situation - purchased a CPO and took it to the service (to another dealership) month after purchase date. They measured my tread depth and it was slightly more than 2/32 to the wear bar. I made a complaint to the original dealership, after that their general manager reached out to me. And do you know what he said?

That the wear bar is when the tires entire the yellow category and replacement is near and their height is 3/32, so the way other dealership is measuring is going to just make it seem like I need tires sooner. We strictly follow CPO rules and so on.

When I replied to him that wear bar is actually the red zone, wear bar height is 2/32 (not 3/32) and pirelli standards is to replace between 2/32 and 4/32 - he just ghosted me. Anyways I was planning to switch to the other wheel set, but after that story I'll never again go to these clowns.

See Section 2 of this BMW CPO checklist. Request a copy for the car you're considering.

Exactly what happened to me when I bought a CPO 3-series GT once..

I took it into service for warranty work immediately after purchase and they said all 4 tires need replacing even though the CPO inspection report said tires measured 6/32 (car had 15k miles)

We worked out with the dealer where I bought 2 new tires and they replaced all 4.

There are some very loose interpretations of what a "CPO" vehicle entails out in the real world. You may see a vehicle with most wearable items replaced and in other cases it is a run through the dealers car wash and an extended warranty.

I bought a CPO Mercedes a few years ago. After two weeks I was on the highway and one of the rear tires literally blew out. Turned out it was worn almost through the entire tread. Completely my fault for not checking prior to the sale, but goes to show you that dealers won’t spend any more money than they have to….CPO or not

If it was obvious the tires should’ve been replaced, but were not, I would ask for the situation to be rectified. If the dealer was still not helpful I would inform them I intend to report them to BMWNA.

Dealers hate getting bad reviews.

I bought a CPO X3 with a staggered set of Pirelli P-Zero summer tires on it. The dealership called to tell me the car was ready so I went to pick it up (three hr trip out of state) and during the walk around I noticed the two rear tires looked pretty worn out. I took out my tread depth gauge and found them both to already be illegal in NY and knew they would fail state inspection. I looked at the CPO report and what was recorded did not match my measurements. After bringing this to the attention of the SA, who was in disbelief, he called for the tech who did the CPO and they measured it in front of me and agreed to my findings. Embarrassed they were and the tech simply said he must have read his gauge wrong.

Not sure what really happened cause I believe this to have been a good dealership but I think it just reinforces that you have to do due diligence in all things in life, crap happens, Murphy lurks around every corner, people have bad days, get distracted and some are simply criminal minded. They replaced those two tires on the spot. The fronts were about half worn.

CPO is becoming a joke not just for BMW. Buyer Beware and do your homework.

I had purchased a 1 yr old CPO E46 330ci lease turn-in many years ago. The tires looked great, but I did not notice they were actually snow tires. I drove it occasionally through the fall, and accidentally got caught in a totally unexpected snowstorm on a trip out of town. Amazed at how it performed on the highway, I took a closer look when I got home and they were Blizzaks (I was a newbie to snow tires at the time and had a back up winter car as well). Anyway, having snow tires on an RWD car saved me a lot of pain that day. So a shoddy (or shady) CPO turned out good for me. I think the prior lessee did not bother to change back to original tires when he turned it in.

Most people think a warranty is only the dealer's commitment to fix anything covered within a specified time period. It's more than this -- it is the dealer's assurance to the buyer that the vehicle is exactly as represented. If the CPO inspection says the tires have at least 4/32s tread on them, you don't need to suffer a tire failure to assert a claim. If the tires have less than the inspection report represents, the dealer is being fraudulent, and you have a legal right to have the dealer replace them with conforming tires.
