How to remove oil filter from cap???
Hoping to get some quick help!!
'22 X5 xdrive40i I have the oil cap/filter removed, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to get the filter removed from the cap!! I can kind of rotate it a little bit in each direction, but it won't pull out. I did watch the youtube vid on the x7 oil change and see how he just rotated and it pulled out from cap. Mine will turn but not pull out,,, Help!!! Last edited by oldguy00; 10-31-2022 at 10:51 AM.. |

Lol, OK, thanks, got it out. I think I was just hesitant to pull as hard as I needed to. Rotated as shown in the video, then pulled. I had tried several times, but it needed a solid yank! More difficult than my wife's X4 filter.

Cool. Nice to see others changing their own oil on their X5. For me, it was one of the more challenging oil changes the first time doing it. Getting the oil filter out was hard to figure out.

I have been doing mine, a few of bmws, between 5000 and 7500 depend on early oil analysis too. Just want to see how B58 does with oil.

Once it was loosened off, it was pretty easy to lift it out, enough room for that. Outside of the tight space for the filter and my challenge in getting the filter out of the cap, it was pretty easy, the oil pan screw is easy enough to reach just laying on my back and reaching under the car. Easier to drain than my '15 Honda Pilot, which is what I first learned to do my own oil changes on. Filter on the Honda was easier to change though. It didn't save a ton of $$ because the LL-17 oil, even from my local Canadian Tire, was quite expensive. Taxes in I paid about $180 Cad (about 140 US) for the oil and BMW filter. The dealership, taxes in, is right around $250. So $70 savings and lots of time saved by doing it in my driveway, not terrible. And while I do trust my dealership, there is always that peace of mind knowing exactly what oil was used, the filter was changed, no tools were left in the engine bay (this has happened to me on another car after dealership service), etc etc. If it were OK for me to just use Penzoil Platinum Euro, which I don't believe is LL rated, my overall cost would have been closer to $100 Cad. But everywhere I asked online about using a non-LL rated oil, people seemed to think I'd be going straight to hell for even considering it....................sigh...........
