M240i vs 440i vs m235i

Hi,

So I currently own a 430d x drive and really enjoy the car in terms of the performance, fuel economy and looks however i feel i am missing out on the sound of a nice petrol.

I have been looking at M240i, M235i and also 440i's. I test drove a 440i GC today and was quite underwhelmed at the sound..It sounded great on a cold start but when driving the car i could virtually barely hear it even with the windows down and sunroof open?? I was just wondering will this be the same on the other cars, m240i and m235i? I have noticed lots of people saying the m235i sounds better than the B58 in the 440i/m240i but didn't realise how poor the sound was on the b58's. I enquired about the MPPSK kit and the salesperson didn't seem to know much about them... he said that it was only an option on the 340i and 440i and it isn't available for the m240i/m235i's - is this true..he didn't seem too confident?

Also in terms of the MPPSK kit if they are only available on the 440i would it bring the performance up to the performance of the m240i (0-60 in 5.1 in the 440i vs 4.6 in m240i 0-60) and would it make a noticeable difference to the sound too?

I am curious to see if anyone has made a similar jump too as to be completely honest when i got back in my 430d i actually weirdly preferred the noise of my diesel....thats how underwhelming the b58 was for me..

The petrol felt slightly smoother but there was absolutely no difference in terms of speed/power from what i could feel on that short test drive.

All in all, should i be avoiding the cars stated or will the MPPSK kit make a big difference? or is it something else i should be focusing on e.g. an aftermarket exhaust etc?

The B58 sounds pretty good, better than my former N55 if you ask me. What actually kills its sound in modern B58 powered cars is the dreaded OPF (Otto Particulate Filter), which appeared mid 2018 if I'm not mistaken. I bet your 440i was from after that date, wasn't it?

ah really thats interesting as i've been reading the N55 sounds better! Yes you are spot on, forgot to mention that it was a 2018 so not PRE OPF! Is it that noticeable? on the pre OPF cars they sound much better or barely noticeable? I think i need to try and hear a pre OPF b58 to truly know

Yes, I guaranty you it is VERY noticeable. I've had the opportunity to do a sound check with a G82 M440i, it was litterally night and day with my 2016's 340i. The ower of the brand new M440i was slightly annoyed

Very glad to hear this as i was pretty set on getting one of the b58 engine cars but after today was steering away from them.. i will have to try and find a pre OPF one to see how it sounds on the road!

Despite it being a 2018 model it did still sound great on a cold start though which gave me high expectations for the drive which i think played a part in my disappointment.

I appreciate your comment about the pre OPF.. i was aware of this but completely forgot when viewing today!

try to find f30 lci 2016-17 with b58. The sound is good and lci is improved over pre lci that has n55.

Even pre-OPF the B58 in most applications (I have a 540) is very quiet normally. Sounds great on a cold start, but then settles down very quickly indeed. Sounds good when you stretch its legs but in normal driving its very quiet (I like it like that!)

Dude, I don't like it, but cars have modes. So, as a result, put it in sport and go.
I drive in comfort less than 10% of the time. It is far too neutered. Sport opens up the exhaust, throttle response, body feel...
