avi video to DVD

Anyone know if you can convert avi video files to burn onto a DVD & watch on a DVD player?

Should just run in Windows DVD maker - add to project and it will then encode when you burn.

You can, but it's annoying and time consuming. DVD format also takes a lot more memory than .avi, so what would have fitted on a CD will now fill a DVD.

Most of the newer DVD players are branded as 'divx' players. This means that they will play .avi files without conversion.

If yours won't play 'divx' have a look for one that will. They are pretty cheap:

Otherwise, use 'winavi' (not free) to convert to DVD format and 'DVD shrink' (free) to burn:

As has been said you should probably buy a divx compatible dvd.

But if you want to use a encoder to make a dvd use the best convertxtodvd (can be found for free if you know where ), win avi is poor in comparison.

You dont want to go down the cce and canopus route think thats a bit to much for what you want

A DVD player that can play AVIs can be bought for pennys ... Save a LOT of hassle.

But I bought a little media box (MEVIS : http://www.mevis.ch/ but actually an Asian product) and installed a 500GB HD (The 1TB drive I tried had a little problem to boot up - I'm guessing it takes just that bit longer to get spinning up to speed). Think it cost me just over £100 and the cost of the HD (CHEAP).

I can then connect the media box directly to the TV through HDMI, Component or AV. It has a main standard USB connection and will mount as a simple drive on any PC and I just copy across my AVIs. It also has ethernet and wireless built in and can stream directly from any configured server. I even had an external HD linked into the USB ports and it played flawlessy from it. Comes with a remote too.

It plays all the main formats including Matroska/MKV so my HD files play back too. You would need to install codec packs to get windows to play these. It also plays all my MP3s and can have JPEG playback folders. Cool wee toy

I've been looking for something like this and this one looks ideal.

Will it play HD resolution divx films?

Can you FF or RW during playback?

Remote control?

Still not sure if it will play HD resolution .avi files?

e.g. 720 pixels wide by 'x' high

My divx player has a max resolution width of (I think) 640 pixels. Main reason for getting a media box, would be to play higher res stuff.

Using the Matroska container MKV (which can contain AVI) it plays back HD fine - I have the 6 Star Wars films as MKV, which were originally recorded from Sky HD (Which from memory is 720P - much wider than 720) and they look GREAT. You can select the output to default to HD modes. I have it in high on my HDMI, and presently have the box back with me in the UK and connected through composite and scart.

I've tried it with quite a few formats and it works very well.

Fast forward etc., only works as well as the format and compression techniques will allow as in any player. But it works. And you can store about 6 bookmarks from differeing films.

Very good wee box.

The PDF explains a lot.

Nero Vision is very easy to use and it comes with the popular Nero Burning ROM software.

On simpler lines to Dave_3's reply..

You may also find that your DVD has a single USB slot on the front? This will allow you attach a simple external Hard Drive or pen drive and play it straight from there. No messing with conversions or burning...

What's the make and model?

Good point. Although I find that my DVD player (part of a phillips home cinema system) struggles to read a USB stick fast enough to play movies smoothly AND upscale to 1080i at the same time.

Mine also works with a powered external hard drive, but will not read from my ipod in disc mode.

At the moment I just burn movies to CD in .avi format - works, but only at lowish resolutions (although they then look good when upscaled by the player).

I'm going to check out the Mevis though. Sounds good.

I've been looking at these little media centres for a while, but my current attention (and money) is on my Man Room 1080 P projector. Santa's just got me a Denon 1909 AV amp and in the new year (once my insurers have coughed up my flood money ) I'll be getting a nice 106" HD screen.... and some decent Kef's to plasy through.. Just need a decent Bluray source (possibly a PS3 to dopuble up with the games) and I'm done...

The OP didn't specify he wanted HD, so the pen drive 'should' be OK delivering SD format... but I agree your point is spot on for HD content.

I too have a fast external HD for my movies. Much easier to move it over the network to some dedicated storage. I haven't played with Ipod delivery, but can'rt see me needing to.

Next fun and games is to split and cat 5 my Sky HD to my manroom.... try and see if I can get around paying for multiroom (don't mind having to watch the same programmes as football and F1 get priority.....)
