N47 DPF in place Stage 2?

Hello all,

I have a 220D (N47) with Stage 1 (~215hp 380nm tq) tune.

I want to get more power for track use but it is also my daily drive.

I want to achieve around 245hp and 480nm tq.

Everyone says to do that i have to remove the DPF and EGR. I also want some exhaust sound. But removing DPF will cause smell and i dont want it. There is a catalytic converter in the midpipe, maybe this without DPF will prevent the smell?

Is it possible to achieve that much power without getting the DPF or engine damaged?

I really would like to hear from your experiences, especially from a N47 tuner.

Yes, it's definitely possible to have more power with DPF working, but they really really need to know how to tune and not decalibrate everything.

Thanks for the answer.

Do you know about tuning diesels and values?

if so:

Right now my tune is 70mg fuel and 1.8bar turbo. (im not sure)

My target is 80mg fuel and 2-2.1 bar turbo.

Won't it be generate more exhaust gas and particles? If yes, my DPF will get full faster. Also if EGR stay in place, engine temperature will be higher, and i guess it is not good also.

In all cases, removing DPF and EGR seems to give better performance and less damaging.

I am really not experienced and just want to learn, thanks!

I recommend you do a lot more research and get familiarised before you start making any changes.

DPFs do not "get full", at least not in the traditional sense of a container filling up. They filter soot particles, occasionally run a regen cycle (using additional fuel to heat the DPF to temperatures high enough to burn the soot into ash) based upon the calculated fuel consumed by the engine, and typically have a lifespan of around 250K miles.

It is unlikely that you will need to remove the DPF unless you are trying to achieve a very high state of tune. DPFs, if they are in good working order, do not typically create significant back-pressure.

My 330d is tuned to around 70-90bhp above stock (depends on the dyno and the ambient conditions), has done >100K miles, and the back-pressure across the DPF has been measured as nominal.

Thanks for the detailed answer.

I know about DPF, EGR and the other systems, it was just a quick definition for DPF regen cycle.

From what i understand, your 330D got a soft tune without removing EGR or DPF.

Since N47 is 1 liter smaller than 330D's engine, i get less power increase with a soft/stage 1 tune, around 30-40 bhp.

I am talking about more gains like 60-70 bhp, that is why i was worried about the restricting systems.

But if the DPF is not restricting as much, running stage 2 tune with DPF won't be a huge problem.

I run the 328d (N47 2.0, 181hp) at 270hp with dpf just fine. It's not a restriction. It's all about how they write the tune. One tuner's Stage 2 doesn't equal another's.
