Is Chivalry Well and Truely Dead?
Yesterday I went to pick up some alloy wheels for my E39, so borrowed my mums Land Rover, that all went smoothly and the man helped me put these wheels into the Land Rover, thanked him had a look at his classic Mustang and went on my merry way
Got home and the weather was nice enough so thought I'd put them on myself, saves taking them to the tyre place and paying them, so I got to work, after two wheels it was getting very hard work, anyone whose met me will be able to tell I'm not a very strong girl Onto the third wheel, the man from next door came out, I thought my luck was in and he would help me with these two remaining wheels, as you do, I said hello and he said hello, you're doing well with those wheels! I said oh it's very hard work! and he just said yeah I guess so! Got something out of his car and went back into the house, I was really quite annoyed! Eventually all wheels where on, car drives like a dream (pat on the back lol)! So, I put this question to all the men here what would you have done?

I would have kept well out of the way, instead observing from a bedroom window, probably enjoying a nice cup of tea

WHy does he have to lend a helping hand, he might have been busy. At least he said hello.
If he had come out and you were struggling to know where event he jack went then he may have helped. Considering you had done two he could see you were not having any probs. He might have just gone to his motor get get some Jonnies out of the glovebox. No wonder he went straight back in after some small chat.

I thought Chivalry was killed by gender equality
Or maybe his wife was observing from a window, drinking tea, and making sure that if he paid any more attention to you, he's not going to get any that night. |

Offer to help a woman out and they snap that they can manage, don't offer and they bitch that chivalry is dead. You can't win.
You burnt your bra's and wanted to be treated equally. So now change your own wheels, open your own doors, buy your own drinks and stop moaning. Just out of interest why would you expect him to help? |

Chivalry, alas, is based upon the concept that women are weak and helpless and men have to help them otherwise they would be lost.
Nowadays, an act of chivalry would only be safe in a situation where obvious help was required. I have helped women change wheels in the past and the offer was always eagerly accepted - especially a puncture on a wet night and they were wearing decent clothes. Funny that, they don't want to get their good clothes dirty but don't mind you messing up your suit! Most women, it's true don't know how to change a wheel - and an increasing number of males also but that wasn't the case for you Porscha, as you had already changed two yourself. You weren't a lady in distress but a lady who knew what she was doing so chivalry wouldn't apply in your case. Neighbourliness perhaps but the age difference might have made it look odd. So cheer up, it isn't really dead, just not appropriate for your scenario. |

Porscha luv.........at least he paid you some attention eh. As Alan said, wrong situation in all honesty lol.
As for chilvalry being dead.........nah it 'aint don't worry. I believe the average British male still prides himself on our 'etiquette rules'. This lunchtime I had two doors held open for me and smiles to go with it..........must be xmas Only kidding boys. |

Yeah suppose you're all right, I didn't really need help as such and wouldn't really expect it, the offer / thought would have been nice though! Even if I'd said "No thankyou but thankyou for the thought" lol!
Red - will upload a couple of pics
