Do you think it's okay to raise your kid to be a social media influencer?

Apparently this is a trend right now. Parents will create IG profiles / TikTok profiles / etc for their babies in the hopes they will gain enough fame / traction to one day become an influencer and not have to get a real job.

It started with Charlie D'Amelio and she's now worth hundreds of millions.

I'm on the side of it's not okay but I can see the other side...

Ditch the f-ing cellphones.

Teach your kids how to play baseball, soccer, ride bicycles, build tree forts, fly kites, climb mountains, fish and fix things.

Digital thumb-numb-nuts is crap.

Is it that shocking though? There are parents who are fanatics with their kids about all kinds of stuff. I know someone personally who is broke, has no job, has no money but manages to spend an incredible amount of time and money on having their kids play sports like they are training them to be some professional athlete. You had that show with that parents obsessed with kid beauty pageants. Maybe this is the millennials version of that?

What I find more disturbing is the fact that there are such things as social media influencers to start with.

Yeah and onto the flipside you could read, that parents had accused tiktok for the death of their childs (9 and 8) for participating at the newest challenge of choking until passing out - they couldnt obviously not decide when to stop.

I mean, c'mon, legal age for tiktok is afaik 13 y/o, so my first question would go to the parents, why they hadnt stop this immediately at their kids and wth are they doing into that age a) with smartphones and b) w/o any attention through parental advisory making accounts at a social media.

Every third little succer called himself an influencer and there for sure some kids, who are rocking some business and make money with it - but I am probably too old to see the deeper sense into posing public and sell your soul just for the fame.

Slippery slope. I feel like so many kids doing that end up in depression. My daughter is 5, I can't imagine encouraging that life style.

It's only okay if they espouse the virtues of gardening with gatorade.

Otherwise, it's not like the world needs more ego driven attention whores with cameras that feel the need to be edgy and stand out. I would hope there was a backup plan for these kids and that they at least are instilled with a sense of decency, morals, andactual life skills.

It was an inevitable thing that this would happen (actually I'm sure it's been happening for a while now). Like those that are pushed towards pro sports as THE only path forward, what percent actually make it vs end up in a dead end with no path forward?

When you think about it, an influencer is nothing more than someone who gets likes and followers - professionally. A small minority probably do very well, most are probably just dreamers looking for the easy way out and up for a big disappointment - YOU HAVE TO WORK.

Pathetic.

I suppose in a way it's like any marketing position... just in a sadder form.

Social media influencer has to be one of the most volatile jobs. You see a lot of them who do really well, they quit their day job and then the algorithms or interests change and they are back to square one. At least if you are an athlete and avoid getting injured you can do well for a few years.

Overall, I agree. These two things in your statement stood out to me...
As I have been doing a little bit of research on this topic.

1. TRUE - "A small minority probably do very well"
2. TRUE - "YOU HAVE TO WORK."

And may I add this...
The small minority of social media influencers do work, like crazy hours of work. The top 5 social media influencers have been at it for years (10+, 15+, some pushing 20) and even in their success today, they employ crews of videographers, editors, story writers, etc. It's a marketing agency with the influencer as the creative director.

The ONLY ones getting to the top faster are in porn unfortunately a la Onlyfans. But eventually that media vehicle will become saturated too (like blogs, like podcasts, like Youtubers, like...).

The trick is to start up early, have a niche idea/thing, keep at it and build the following as the platform increases... but is also the gamble.

Got to give them some respect for making it happen.

My neighbor's son dated a pretty popular social media influencer, and he's good friends with my son so they all hung around a lot.

Her entire life is "fake" - everything is staged, every picture of her has to be absolutely perfect, everything has to be messaged just right, etc. It was insufferable even watching from a distance. My son told me when they went out, all she did was stare at her phone to manage views, followers, etc.

Fortunately, my neighbor's son broke up with her after a year - even he couldn't take it anymore.

Nope. Like everything else online the idea that these influencers are successful is 99% fake.

I've met an influencer like this once... the thought of me even hanging out with her once I saw what her life was like 99% of the my time... made me throw up inside. How could anyone live a life like this?

Better to have a kid making money being an influencer, than to have them listening to one. But both seem so shallow and tacky.

My wife and I raised to two kids and we never pushed them towards any particular profession. But, when they decided what they wanted to do for a living, we supported and encouraged them, including with college tuition, etc.

I don't think it is right for a parent to push a child into any profession - let the kids decide, then support them.

And we wonder why kids are so f'ed up and can hardly look another human in the eyes or have an conversation much less an intelligent one. They need to tell their kids to seek a career in mental health because these kids live in such a filtered reality.

Social media is probably one of the primary variables contributing to the decay of mental health in the world so I'll pass.
