error code 244C00 and TSB SI B11 06 18

Was driving today and got a drivetrain malfunction/drive moderately warning with no CEL. Checked errors and saw I had 244C00 - Boost pressure control, control deviation: charging pressure too low/positive deviation. A little research led me to a TSB for my vehicle to replace the turbo boost actuator rod and clips. Has anyone ran into this issue and done this fix?

Edit: Here is the TSB

I would check for boost leaks first honestly.

Do you have ISTA+? If so, check the service plan for this particular error, it should describe it step by step.

Also you could have a boost leak, as Enabled said.

I do not have ISTA+. I'm pretty much a noob when it comes to working on cars. From what I've gathered from doing a search on it, it can be a lot of things. From what I've gathered I need to check the lines, the pressure converters, this rod, and a few other things including the turbo being bad.

I've honestly got no experience in troubleshooting this sort of thing, I was kind of hoping this rod could be checked by removing a shield or something, I wanted to see if anyone had done it to get an idea of how to get to it.

I'm also trying to figure out how to do a pressure test or smoke test on the lines on the N47. I've never attempted one and everyone I see doing one the turbo is easily accessible.

Honestly, you should find a BMW specialized shop, that has ISTA which is the official BMW tester, so that they can properly scan the car and figure out what's wrong.

Changing parts on a whim, or based on google finds, it's never a good idea and you could end up spending more money than in a shop and not even fixing the issue.

Also, you should fix this asap, because this kind of boost/charge pressure errors, will stop your DPF from regenerating and you could end up with a clogged DPF on top of that.

It might be indeed something as simple as a vacuum leak, but you really never know unless it's properly diagnosed.

Welp it looks like this in fact my problem. I hadn't driven the car cause I work from home and put off looking at it until today. Popped the hood and found this lever which was actually pretty easily accessible and should actually be the first thing checked with this error because once I figured out where it was exactly it's extremely easy to see and test with your hand. Although I didn't need to reach in to see that as it was completely disconnected on one side and looks to be my problem.

Good find!

It's a bit unusual, (how does the circlip go missing?), but it should be easy to fix. Is the plastic lever/rod still there?

Apparently the clips "rot" and brake enough that they put a TSB and a fix kit out with the rod and the clips together. The rod looks to be still attached to the lower part. I can't tell if it's intact or broken but the clip is certainly gone.

Hopefully anyone else searching for this error code can see this as one thing to look at in the many things this could stem from and it's incredibly easy to access and diagnose before spending money.

interesting, never saw this before though, hopefully it's an easy fix. So it's disconnected on the actuator side or the turbo?

Part came in today. The actuator rod was completely missing, so looks like both clips failed. Kit comes with the actuator rod and 3 clips which is good because I promptly lost one before getting the idea to put some cardboard under where I was working. The clips were hard to get on. You're going to need some long needle nose pliers. I finally got the idea to hold the clip with some spreading pliers while getting the clip on by using the needle nose pliers on the top and the rod until it seated into place. The clip on the turbo side will be your toughest as there isn't much room.

Hi

I'm getting this exact same error, been to a few specialists and they just keep saying change turbo without even checking it.

I've tried changing the pressure converter and have booked it in for a smoke test but after seeing this post want to check the part your referring to.

Can you tell me where abouts in the engine bay it is and what I should be looking for? Apologies I'm a total novice mechanically but really want to sort out the issue

No problem at all. It's on the passenger side of the vehicle and if you check out my first picture, you'll see the coolant expansion tank in the bottom right in the pic, as a reference as where on the engine to look. It's really easy to see from the top so no need to move anything. If it's still on the top part reach down and wiggle it and see if it's still connected with the clips.

Thanks for this. I tried to check this on my car today but access and what was visible was limited. Guessing I have a different engine to you (n57).

I've got the car booked in with a specialist next week so will ask him to check this first before trying other things.

So far I have had a pressure converter changed, checked for boost leaks, changed boost sensor but so far no luck In fixing it. The next thing was going to be to change the small turbo, so really hope I get lucky with this actuator rod.

Can I ask, where did you get the part from. Seems it's a known issue on these engines but the part number in the technical directive doesn't seem to be readily available. It also doesn't seem to a well advertised issue as googling it only brings up the link you shared and nothing else.. strange

For the N57 the part number is 11 65 8 596 432 and you should be able to pick it up at any dealer. BMW Parts Now has it for $103 if you end up needing it.
