Rattle when turning on warm engine
Hi guys,
I have a 2014 f30 (318d) auto transmission and when the engine is warm and it turns back on from stop start (or if warm and turning back on again) it makes this loud rattle/grinding noise. It goes away after roughly 5 seconds but it sounds concerning to me. If I have the left in drive after stop start for example, the sound is very present but it goes away/gets quieter if I put it into park. I may post a video if my explanation isn't clear enough. If you have any ideas, please let me know what it is. Thanks |

It's the goddamn air intake pipe, it's poorly designed, the plastic also deforms in time due to the heat in the engine compartment, and it begins to vibrate at the junctions. To confirm, sit in the car with the engine running, and have someone press on the air intake pipe in different locations, if the rattle stops, there you go. I ended up ordering a new air intake pipe as it was driving me insane, but it's crazy expensive, about 250 USD and it will start to rattle again at some point. You could try to apply some felt tape around the edges of the pipe, at the insert points, that could work also. |
