Question about oil temperature

I was stuck in traffic for about almost an hour tonight. It was stop and move a few inches and stop type of traffic. I finally get in the tunnel, driving around between 15mph to 25mph. I was in 2nd gear the entire time. During this entire time my oil temperature was well below 250.

When I finally get out of the tunnel, about 5 minutes later, the oil tempature needle moves to 250 and stops there. It didn't move to 250 quickly. It moved slowly. After a while of moderate driving, the needle moves below 250 again. The weather was in the low 30s F.

Is this normal? It had never happen to me before. In the summer, with the 80s and 90s, the needle just stays a little below 250 and stays there even in traffic.

What does the car do when the oil temperature goes up? I have a oil cooler. Do you feel any difference?

normal dude, wouldn't freak out about it...if you're cruising in 2nd in the mid to high RPM range, oil temps will go up...I'd worry if it went to like 260 or 270....that usually only happens on the track or so...

Probably no airflow in that front fender area at such low speeds.. effectively preventing the OC from actually doing any heat exchange.. Its just adding a little heat dissipation.

250 is normal for a BMW in 30 degree weather?

Interesting.

I had mine hit 250° in stop and go traffic (65 minutes for two miles). I noticed about two hours later that the acceleration wasn't quite right. A couple of days later the acceleration was completely out to lunch whereby shifting from 1st to 2nd the car actually slowed down even though the pedal was firmly depressed. This was with the temperature at between 230° and 250°. Turned out the radiator fan AND the oil condition sensor were bad. An inauspicious start with the car since it only had 1500 miles.

Does your car have an oil cooler? I notice that you don't have sports package.

Nothing will happen, if your car goes higher in temp. like around the 300 area, the car will automatically go into limp mode.

If you have sport pkg. you will have an oil cooler which allows you to hit 250 in temp, when stock or tuned.

Remember, if you get a tune, you temp will rise depending on how you push the car.

Normal, BMW likes to roast the oil by setting the normal operating temp to around 240-250. The oil cooler thermostat wont even open until then. Its a way for them to get us to buy a new car every 4 years.

Pretty normal. Mine is sport package with no oil cooler...the hottest i've ever hit was 255-260...normally, after 15 min of normal driving, she's at 220 ish.
