Red Hot Alternator

Hey folks, just a casual 340i GT guy here.

I recently got my car coded with BM3 Stg 1 multistage OTS. The car ran fine on map 3 (stg 1 93 oct) a couple of days, then ran fine again today. After about ten minutes or so, the car was making some high pitched noise as I was pulling up to a parking lot, no dash indications. I pulled over and popped the hood while the engine was running and found my alternator with a single spot that was amber (heard) hot. I shut the car down, gave it ten minutes before starting the car again and booting the OEM map and heading back home while babying the throttle. I get home to find that the alternator is not red hot this time. I'll have to see if the map is what did it, but figured I would ask the folks as well.

Has anyone come across a problem similar to this? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

This doesn't make much sense the tune wouldn't make the accessory belt move faster. Or do anything that could affect the way the alternator functions. Most likely your alternator is about to fail, completely unrelated to the tune. You might have damage to your battery because of this. Seems you caught it early though try just replacing the alternator

That has nothing at all to do with the tune. You have an issue..

Double check the serpentine belt to ensure it's properly on the pulley. From what I have read, a slipping belt can cause this.

I didn't think it made sense for the tune to have caused this but that was also the only thing that changed in just prior to this issue so I had to try 😭

I didn't have this issue again on the map so I may have to replace the alternator.. I did check the belt and they seemed to be seated normally.

Thanks for the responses! (Maybe not so much the "you have an issue" response LOL &#129315
