335 to a 328. Miss the power BUT...
Had to drop my 335 of to at the dealer today for some repairs and they gave me a 328 to drive. I gotta say, while I miss the power, I really like the turbine-like smoothness of the 328. My 335 motor just doesn't have the same silky feel. My previous car was an E46 and it also had the same smoothness I associate with BMW.,,it's kind of missing with my 335.
Don't get me wrong. I love my 335, but I just didn't realize how much I missed the feel of the normally aspirated BMW motors. Anybody else notice the same thing? |

Yep.
The two feel totally different. Although sometimes I miss the low end grunt of the N54. Chipped 335i was just ungodly fast when you had the room to open it up.

Ha, this is funny, I just posted about this on another thread, your right, the inline 6 is like silk, butter smooth, I know first hand with my E46, I can account for exactly how you feel. It's obviously less powerful but the inline 6 is one amazing engine in it's own right.

No, I wouldn't sacrifice the power but that's partly because I live in Colorado and the elevation sucks a lot of power out of a non-turbo. At sea level though, I might think about it.

I would like to get a new car in a couple of years and thought I would not consider anything but an e92 335 but who knows.

They are both I6's, hence both motors should be "silky smooth."
Not sure what the turbos have to do with anything. Boost holds throughout the powerband. |

Yes, both motors are 3.0 liter I6's, so you would think they would be similarly smooth. But they just aren't. The non-turbo motor is noticeably smoother.
Again, the 335 motor is amazing, but I do miss the silkiness of the non-turbo motor a little. |

Just because it is an I6 does not mean it will be silky smooth. Look at Ford's trusty 300ci I6, it was a torque monster for its size, but smooth?! Hell no. Sure its apples and oranges, but just saying...

Thats one of the main reasons I went with the 335. I liked the 328 but the 35-40HP loss at our altitude made the 328 rather unexciting whereas at < 6000' the turbo motor apparently loses no power due to adaptive boost or something. If we were at sea level the 328 would have been more acceptable. And the 330 even more so.

I had an e46 M3, and that engine was not that smooth. Sometimes there was a slight vibration at 8000 rpm's. The 335i engine seems a lot smoother.

hahahaha, that's hillarious
maybe the "slight vibration" was you bouncing the engine off the rev limiter in every gear? |

silky smooth, yes, the 328i is by far the smoothest motor out of the 3-series line up...but you forget about everything when you're at 3k rpm's in 3rd gear in a 335i and push the pedal to the floor and get thrown back into your seat.
My next car will definitely be no less than 300hp and will only come from BMW and will most likely be an M.

335i is programmed differently on ECU then non turbo 328i. Yes they are both I 6 3.0 L. Their intake manifold is just slightly different, ECU, Traction control module and the transmission. 335i is designed to be more aggresive due to twin turbos. That's y it feels little rough!!

I've driven and owned many different performance cars, and the 335 is an extremely refined ride, with a VERY smooth I6 (turbos don't affect the 'smoothness'). |
