Thanks for the advice.
Personally, if I had an unlimited account I would have no problem hooking someone up. I didn't ask anyone to "fork out" any money... |

Carfax is a piece of crap and waste of money. Totally unreliable and inaccurate.
I was looking at a 330i before I got my current car and it said it had a clean history. But a VIN check with the BMW dealer turned out that it had been in a frontal collision. BMW said they would not warranty anything on the front half of the car. |

Yeah I do question the reliability of carfax because 5 years ago my honda was in an accident where a car swiped the front end of it going perpendicular and the whole front bumper ripped off. A year later for the hell of it I looked it up on carfax when a buddy of mine subscribed to the unlimited plan and it came out clean. I wonder if there's other accurate ways to find out the vehicle history

Simply put carfax relies on the insurance companies and states to report on the history of car. If that is not done or the incident is very recent the Carfax database is not up to date.
I too had a car which I had an repair done, noting major but the insurance company paid out and made the repair. A few years later when I was helping my dad buy a truck we got a carfax account and my car came up clean. It only showed it was in for normal state inspection for PA. It didn't even show I was the second owner. However, the vehicle my dad was considering buying showed it was owned a number times, it was company owned vehicle and was moved through a few states, and it show that it had been in for servicing a number of times in each of the states and the best part it show the Odometer reading was turned back. My dad bought it anyway and we just use these facts to bring the price down further. the best part is the Dealer claimed it had a clean carfax report. That was before they knew we ran our own report. So clean does not mean clean but if it does show a problem it probably accurate. |

Carfax will NOT show you everything, everytime. I had my old '97 E32 totaled this summer, and looked into getting a used 335i. I paid for the unlimited 1-month service and used it on some cars I was considering. And since it didn't cost anything more, I went ahead and checked on my old car.
I got it directly from the dealer, it was a loaner that had $3k worth of front end fender bender damage. I know as I saw the bill. I owned it for 10 years and had two more fender benders. All repaired fully since both times it was paid for by the other car's insurance. Carfax only showed the first and last, even tho all three had been done in dealer-authorized body shops. It also said I was the only owner. I was the first 'retail owner' but it didn't show that the car had 8k miles put on it by the dealer as a loaner. So I think it's worth it, for reasons listed by prior posters, but Let the Buyer Beware, it might not be 100% complete.
