New gift for myself...

Since I'm going to spend 6 weeks in Europe this summer, I decided to treat myself a new gift.

This way I can take some more of my movies, music, and software to fix peoples shit while I'm there. Its amazing how cheap storage is becoming nowadays...

This is the 2 TB Monster:
http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=10600

At $200 bucks, the 500 is a great thing to have. So much storage only on one drive. My desktop has over a TB but its got 5 HD's built from over a year and a half.

If you dont mind the number of drive, the best thing to get right now are 16MB 250 giggers for about 80 bucks shipped. Spend 200 and build yourself a very basic sever box and hide is some corner of your house. Only needs a power wire and an ethernet cable. All changes can be done through VNC after initial setup.

Hey, Poldim, from my experience all harddrives regardless of manufacturer (Seagate, Western Digital, Maxtor, etc.) inevitably fail - it's just a matter of when.

With that being said, I no longer only get 1 HD but 2 and I RAID them so that when one fails, I immediately buy a new one/pair.

My lil bro uses the same concept and he's running off of 6 RAID'ed 200 GB for a total of 1.2 TB in space but realistically he only has 600 GB of space since the other half is nothing but a duplicate/backup.

EDIT: And man, with a 500 GB monster when that thing fails you can only imagine how much data you just lost right there!

I've been playing with computers long enough to know that you need to change HDs as often as you change your car tires. I run raid with my Raptors on the desktop. This keeps the OS and my personal documents safe and secure. The rest of the storage is downloaded seasons of shows, movie collections, and an enormous music library. Woud it suck if I lost it? Yes. Buts its easily replacible by downloading the free media over again. With the school's T5000 connection, its pretty easy.

The 500 gigger is going into my external enclosure, so nothing will ever be peremantly lost if it crashes. I think when I get back in 6 weeks, the prices on the 16MB 500GB will be about 200, so I will get a couple of those and replace the two 160's currently in there.

Student.

Clear corners would probably cost more to have me bring a bunch in rather than ship them individually...
