Want to Save Up For New Car

As you may or may not know I am absolutely terrible with money, really bad!

but I want another 911 (preferably either a pre-SC OR a 3.2 Carrera, have owned an SC) unfortunetely the fun ends there because I want a good example I've got to save some money and it's not going to happen next week!

The question is to do this is it best to not buy another fun car and leave that money in the bank? Saving on extra petrol, insurance, repairs and possibly depreciation. Just stick with this 5 Series til I can buy the Porsche?

Any other options? Don't want to go and swap the 5 Series for a fun car because it'll be more petrol, more insurance, more repairs, maybe a little depreciation therefore eating into the 911 fund at the same time I could be stuck with this car for 2-3 years

£15-20K Obviously how much I can save up depends on how much work I get over these next couple of years.

Also what I'd like to know is the best way to save money, where, in what account etc.

Is it all worth being stuck with an E39 5 Series?

Only you can answer whether it is worth being stuck in a car that doesn't fit the bill. In my case it wouldn't be.

Make sure you get an ISA and fill that up each year.

Why not get a loan to finance it though?

Here's a novel idea And one I did myself.

I used an old car when I was at Uni. I stored my fun car and bought a £200 Escort MkIII Laser. Ran like a watch, could leave it anywhere and all the lads at the flat we rented chipped in - cost me very little to run. Especially when I added my claimed travel allowance on. And to be honest, I didn't use it much in the city - but made full use of the bars.

But, to keep me studying I had a car brochure for a car I wanted and laid that open at the exit to my bedroom. Every time I got bored of studying I got up and saw the car looking at me, and I would go back and do some more studying.

When I graduated and built up the cash I went out and bought said car

Give yourself a goal. You'll get it. Butterfly about and you'll never make a big leap forward.

Ant and the grasshopper ?

The car (5 Series) actually fits the bill 100% for the stuff I need to do and is just excellent for 90% of the journeys I make, on the other hand, it's not interesting and how on earth can you explain that you are really, somewhere a petrolhead with an E39 520i

ISA - is the tax free one isn't it? Can you only put money into it once a year? If so can you put money into an account which accrues monthly interest then put that amount into the ISA at the end of the (tax?) year and starting again with the other account?

I don't want to finance the car, doubt I would even get a loan as a student anyway but I will 100% not finance the car (done it before, only just finished paying for it a year after I've sold the car)

Thanks.

My problem is I'm not sure I can cope with a shit car for a couple of years, not that the car is really bad it's just boring

Looking to save while at uni as I'm staying at Derby now, due to my house being nice and at the right price, one of my friends who is staying at Derby (currently in uni accomodation) will be coming to live with me next year and we will split the rent can't wait will be loadsa fun!

Hope I'll build the cash up while at uni, don't see any reason why not.

If you have a roommate then your rent is now halved. Take that half and put it into a savings account. Take the half of the utilities the roommate is providing (that you no longer have to foot) and put that in the account as well.

If you have a steady income then put aside a percentage each pay period into the savings account straightaway, preferably with direct deposit (is that available here?) so that you never see it in your regular money account. The out of sight, out of mind bit works well in this instance.

Does the E39 require a lot of maintenance or is it fairly mature? Learn to be bored with what you have, at least for the foreseeable future. Sometimes you just have to live with what you have before you can get what you want. It's going to be difficult to save if you have champagne tastes on a beer budget and the modern "I want it NOW!" attitude.

Few options spring to mind:

1) Work stupid, dirty hours and save every single penny. Remember that girl who bought the dodge viper on normal wages? OK, she was weird, but still that's commitment for you.
2) Finance. As you said, won't get much luck there is the current climate.
4) Prostitution. It's worked for me (arse gets is a bit sore though)
5) Wait... until you can afford it. What am I saying. Just go with 4, although don't ask for it at the job centre.

Rent a house and rent it out the rooms for more then the original rent to make a profit...another form of savings

Rome was not built in a day.

The more effort installed into achieving a goal, the more appreciative of the end result.

Could go on with various analagies but you get the drift.

I agree with Dave on this. Have a picture or brochure of what you want near your bed, desk and fridge. When in doubt of your motivation look at the picture. £5 says you can't do it!!

(that's another way to motivate, bet on it )

Yea that is good actually... get enough people to bet you can't do it, then when you have enough money, get a loan for one... collect your winnings, pay off the loan.. hey presto, free car.

The Porsche will be a money pit so probably wait till you have got loads of cash.

The 5 series will be good to haul around all your photo gear for your new study course. Maybe you could save on rent and sleep in it as well.

"Wait til I've got loads of cash" - that'll be wait forever then Can't say I'm bothered about a money pit were cars are concerned one of those things I suppose, willing to sacrifice other stuff to have a nice car.

I am of the attitude of - you could get ran over by a bus tomorrow so whats the point in "planning for the future" so to speak. I've had some lovely cars now I've got a shit car that is an absolute joke, it is wonderful at doing it's job and a great daily hack but this is someone who does not do A-B cars, I enjoy driving and cars and doing the classic car and PH stuff, well not anymore.

Strange how it impacts on me so much so that I used to have so much aspiration - not anymore though once I was 100% commited and believed I would have a house and a GT3 (996 Mk.1) by the age of 27 was on track for it as well, not anymore I'll be lucky if I've got a 3.2 Carrera and rent a house a bit nicer than the one I've got - great

Might sound materialistic, I doubt any of you have had cars worth £15-20K to end up with one just a year later worth nothing, not due to going to uni either, as this happened before I decided to go. May as well buy a fair 944 seems the peak of my car ownership ended at 19 before most peoples have started.

If this is the "real world" I don't want to know it - thanks.

Very, very depressed about this so called "life".

Christ sake Porsche I'd do anything to be back in your position with what I know today. You did ask for peoples advice and then you don't like the advice of 'save and wait'. There are some very level headed people on here who will give you good advice when asked.

'Live for today because there may not be a tomorrow' is a line I have used all my adult life. But sometimes if you want something enough you have to plan and wait for it to come to fruition. The 'i want it all, and i want it now' attitude is what has put this country into its economic problems we have now.

Believe me when I say that the harder you work and the longer it takes to get something you REALLY want makes it all worth it. Everything else is a distraction and you end up with second best. This is true of you and your cars.

Realise that was a bit of a rant not just from this post also something someone said to me tonight regarding this.

I have no intention of borrowing the money to buy this car and every intention of saving for it, quickest way would be to keep this 5 Series, I don't think I worded this post very well it was along the lines of should I keep the 5 and put more money in the bank if so want bank and account etc. OR should I buy a fun car that I will enjoy and put a little in the bank as and when for this.

You are trying to say "Good things come to those who wait"?

Speak for yourself...

But seriously Porscha, the only way to get things 'now' is with finance. OK, so that's why most of the world is in a credit crunch and everything's failing around ours ears. But if you want it now, its the only way (bar 1-4 of my previous post).

Its far from the end of the world. With the same attitude, I should be crying cause I don't own a lambo. I want one, like, really really want one.. really bad... but I'd have to actually pay for it and stuff.

As I can't, I leave it as a dream car or something to aspire to. I have realistic expectations on life. Don't know whether that comes with age or not, probably (unfortunately) so.

Still say raid a bank though.

My car looks like a cops car too they'd never guess .... could be onto something there ...

What bothers me is more the fact I've had a 911 before, I've had Boxster S before what you've never had I think you can say "I really want one of them but I'll wait" - I would love a Ferrari 355 or a Lamborghini Diablo but don't care if I'm 50 odd before I get one, one day Doesn't matter about that, when you've had something you no longer have though, through stupidity, bad luck, new commitments delete as you will I think you get into the "I need it and now" state of mind! It just makes you feel like a complete and utter loser when everyone you know has got more than you, including students!

Can't explain why I hate this 5 Series so much when it is a great motorway cruiser (90% of my journeys at the moment), carries stuff (photography stuff etc.), doesn't have a mark or ding on it, runs lovely and has got more or less full MOT, is ages away from being serviced, doesn't cost me hardly anything in parts / repairs / oil (I've had a few oil burners )

Tomorrow if you go out you have a 50% chance at being hit by a bus. You also have a 50% chance of NOT being hit by a bus (100% if you stay indoors). If you go through life with the former attitude you'll never have saved enough for what you want when the later actually comes true.

Porsche sounds to me like you have to much time on your hands and think far to deeply about these things in a negative way. This sounds like you put a disproportiate amount of pressure on yourself that is unrealistic.

Yes, life is back to front in many ways. We want nice cars when we are young and older people who do not get potentially the same 'petrol headed' pleasures 9/10 times own them.

But, get over it fast. You had a 986 Boxster S & 911 when you were young. Lucky you for having a taster. Nice and remember this and use it to drive yourself on to want to be in a position to have another one in the future. If you work hard you will get one but it's not the end of the world if you don't. I look back on my Boxster with fond memories no more no less.

Being on a web forum with most people being in the 30+ age bracket. Generally ABC1s and own nice cars, probably home owners and at the next stage of there life is not going to help when you have a downer on yourself.

I would of thought being early 20s having fun and going out would be a much higher prority than a car. These things will come but it does not have to be tomorrow. Good luck.

Faaaaaar too much time on my hands, I'll agree with that one (well at the moment anyway enjoy it while I can!) Today I got all my house tidy NEEDED to be done lol, went shopping with friends and had lunch, took dog for a walk, threw a bucket over the car and it's STILL only 4pm.

Don't have anything to do now, could make some Christmas Cards though all mine are already done so there is no point! Make some jewellery again I've got more excess stuff than I need or want. Waiting for my camera equip to come so I can do some photos.

Not a drinker in the slightest, like to have my tea out over a shared bottle of wine then go to a nice enough bar after but I can't stand the sight of drunks to be quite honest so going out isn't that big on my priorities, travelling is though and cars

So I'm probably going to be thinking about my cars yet again in a minute. Never mind older people I know everyone I know my age has more than I do, how they do it not sure, think living with parents helps!
