Dangerous traffic situation, really.

Dangerous traffic situation warning beginning to bloody annoy me now, been going on far far too long.

Not sure exactly when but 6 or more months ago a message popped up on the iDrive screen 'Traffic information, rockfalls' and on the instrument binnacle 'Dangerous traffic situation'. I thought it rather strange as where the situation appeared to be is not a rocky area, tree lined possibly, but rocky definitely not.

Since then every time I drive that way, the last few weeks its been daily, the bloody message pops up without fail. For the UK based owners its around the Cobham/Weybridge roundabout off the A3.

Anyone else driven this way and got the persistent traffic situation warning or a persistent warning somewhere else?

When I get a moment I intend to pop into my local dealer.

Btw, less than 1/4 mile from where the message pops up is a BMW dealer, the cynic in me says they have done something to show potential buyers the feature. Having said that I regularly drive past another BMW dealer from the same franchise and I get no warnings.

Cheers, Tony

I drove through that junction 2 days ago - the message did not appear on my screen.

However, I do know it is working in my car because earlier in that same journey from Bath, the 'Dangerous Situation - Rockfall' message appeared whilst on the A303. Whilst there were definitely no rocks, (or indeed terrain for rocks to fall from) a short while later there were a whole load of house bricks in the road which had, presumably, been recently dropped from a lorry. So I'm guessing there is a link with Highways England who deal with dangerous debris in the road when alerted by the public.

The reason I think this is the case is because, the only other time it appeared was on the M6 motorway, and again no rocks, but shortly after the message appeared, I passed the Highways Agency Traffic Officers removing a shredded lorry tyre from the carriageway and all traffic had to slow.

I had this on the M66 near Bury. For about six months, every time I was coming that way it warned me the road was closed due to flooding. I learned to ignore it :-/

PITA - however I believe the source of the issue is with the body that transmits the data and BMW consumes? Good luck figuring that out - I gave up.

Not sure if it's connected or I'm missing something but my UK Lci 40d regularly tells me the speed limit is 80mph and all roads on the screen are red indicating traffic issues when there are none !

I have never once, that I can recall anyway, got the message while driving on the A3 past this junction, I've only ever received it while approaching the roundabout from the Weybridge side or Cobham side.

Need to have a chat with BMW this week re my add blue level, still says 8,000 miles, was the same 3,000 miles ago! I'll raise the 'Dangerous Traffic Situation' warning at the same time. I'll report back in due course.

Cheers, Tony

Getting the same rockfall message on the A4 Great West Road around Chiswick/Brentford hiding towards Heathrow.
Becoming annoying.

And in the same area on the A4 is a BMW dealer the same franchise as the one close to where I get the message, bit of a coincidence.....

Update.

Car been in for the last two days @ Berry's Cobham for a brake fluid change, adblue issue and alloy corrosion.

I raised the issue with the dangerous traffic situation and the service advisor said BMW are aware and will at some point putout an over the air fix. He went on to say you can have two identical cars and one will get the warning the other not. He was not aware of the expected fix date so I'm gonna phone BMW and enquire.

Update post BMW conversation to follow.

Cheers, Tony

Traffic

I am getting warnings about "Uneven Highway Ahead" while driving on Interstates and smooth highway. Anyone else getting that? Dealer cannot explain it.

I bet the highway in question had repairs going on in that area in the not-too-distant past.

I get that notification on a stretch of road near my house that was being replaced over several months last summer.

The nav warning messages are out of date, that's all. I expect the message will drop off on a future update.

I get it Northbound on the A3 all the way from Painshill to Hook, with advance warnings from Guildford. Must be about eight months by now. Nothing Southbound though.

It first cropped up after a map update so I waited patiently (six or seven months) for new maps and updated again. No joy.

Spose I'll have to change where I work...

The sat nav is possibly the worst I have experienced in recent years. My £100 TomTom has more up-to-date maps, and better traffic alerts. On a recent trip, my TomTom warned me of a queue ahead - it was the only route to my destination however. While I was stationary in the queue, which had been there for some hours, the BMW sat nav was telling me that the road ahead was clear.

I was on a trip to Norfolk recently and my car took a very dangerous 'evasive action' manoeuvre at a junction where I had right of way.

I'd have to do a little sketch and upload it to explain better but the car slamming the breaks on as I was going into a bend wasn't the best experience!!

Deactivated it for the rest of the journey.

That's strange, I find the BMW nav to be pretty good within the UK. I also use Waze and when I compare the maps for traffic (red in the BMW nav), I find there's pretty much a 1-to-1 correlation. BMW UK must subscribe to good, up-to-date traffic info. OEM maps will always be a few months behind vs the likes of Waze.
