Thundernight Metallic Owners' Thoughts?

I'm having a lot of trouble deciding on a color for my M240i. I thought I was set on the Portimao Blue but the more pics I saw the more I thought it looked too much like a purple blue, a hue that I don't like at all. I had a 2012 M5 in Monte Carlo Blue and I loved that color, and is probably my favorite blue ever from BMW. So I'm kind going back towards the Thundernight color. Since most of you probably bought it based on photos and videos, how did you all like it once it arrived? My fear is that sometimes it looks very bright, almost pink when the sun hits it. But I've also seen videos and pics of it looking like a very dark color with a hint of purple. In overcast it almost looks like black. Anyone get it and regret getting it? I don't hate purple but I haven't been a fan since I was college. Other than the Thundernight, I might end up at Mineral White which looks awesome but I just did want yet another white car. I'm surrounded by them also. But yes the white and black contrast on the car also looks cool too, in fact that's the only color I have personally seen the car in because there is one in the dealership near me. Anyway love to hear from the Thundernight crowd on their experience with the color.

Hi I've personally ordered Thundernight and yet to see a car in the flesh with it as no UK cars have even arrived yet.

But I must say from seeing photos / videos of the paint It reminds me of Velvet blue metallic which I had on my E46 330I years ago.

One Minute looks dark and then looks lighter subject to the sky and weather conditions.

Would be good to hear thundernight owners thoughts and I've left a photo of my old 330i for reference.

I was apprehensive about thundernight myself.. Because purple? But now that I've seen one in person at the dealership, I know I made the right chocie. Thundernight is a really versatile color that presents differently based on lighting conditions. I wanted a tanzenite type of color and I feel like in cloudy days, nighttime, etc you're going to see it as an almost dark blue. There's a few YouTube videos that show it in this light and it's awesome! The brightness on a sunny day will just give you that unique stand out among a sea of silvers, grays, and blacks.

I'd post a photo if I knew how lol 😂

Naturally this is personal preference, I had some trouble with color at first too.
I had consider black on red calipers and red interior, but i didn't want to lose the black contrast along the bottom of the car.
Then i considered white on red, red on red, but i couldn't look past the uniformity of the blue on blue calipers with blue stitching. I've always liked audi's nardo grey but I couldn't find a combination i liked on brooklyn grey. My dealer had large swatches of all the paint colors, I don't get the purple vibe you're getting when i saw the blue in person, my initial comparison was r34 blue. If you find a caliper color you like with the purple i say go for it, all the colors available are really nice on this body imo. I would have loved to see it in the blues from the f80 m3 (marina?) there's an m3 at my dealer in the frozen grey and it looks mental

I kinda thought the same thing. I love thundernight metallic but at the same time I think I would get tired of driving a purple car after awhile. So I went with BSM, red calipers, and tacora red interior with shadow line. IMO I like that it hides the big triangle inlets (that I don't like) better with shadowline and bsm. To each is own tho.

I got Thundernight, I love it! It never looks pink, its a very dark purple and at night, people often mistake it for black. When the sun hits it, you can real see the metallic sparkle in the car. Also since there currently isn't another BMW offered in Thundernight, it feels very special! I posted some pics of it in the new owners thread. Just don't have them on this PC.

Thundernight is fantastic and changes color with conditions. Love mine… Zero regrets!

Looks great !!! Each time I see more pictures makes me happier I ordered one. Should be arriving at Port Bayonne tomorrow and hopefully down to my dealer early next week.

I see you don't ruin the front look by not displaying a license plate. I plan to do the same with mine. Went 7 1/2 years without one on my 435i.

I echo what the majority of the owners have stated. I love the color and was apprehensive at first, but the uniqueness was a huge factor for me.

it's tough to see, but shouldn't those exhaust "tips" be black as well?

I would likely never have noticed this car existed if not for the thumbnails of it in Thundernight on various YouTube car review channels. I went from "what the heck is this purple car?" to having one on order. (Trade-in value also helped that decision.)

The problem I have with some odd metallic colors is that they look very good in the sun but when it’s overcast they can become more monochromatic-looking. We have a lot of overcast days here in PA. I didn’t want to be driving around in a purple car without any sun-induced highlights or color variations.

For that reason, I ordered a Sapphire Black Metallic with Cognac and Red Calipers.

If the M240i colors had included Tanzanite Blue Metallic, I would have jumped on that, as under an overcast sky it reverts to a (for me) attractive darkish blue.

In most overcast photos or videos I've seen of the car, it pretty much looks like black especially at some distance. Also looks black when dirty too. But I'm sure you guys will have spotless cars right? LOL.

Thank you, my wife loved the color so much she decided to give it a name.

It was formally known as "the eggplant", but she was inspired and renamed the car to Barney.

To my eyes, the color is quite beautiful. It would have been a choice of this or Sunset Orange if I was to get a G42. Everything else pales in comparison for me.

I'm of the same opinion. It's the modern day equivalent of Techno Violet or Daytona Violet available during the E36 M3 era with a little more pop.

The thought of the combination of Thundernight with Valencia orange on a bright sunny day would probably make my eyes drunk.

I didn't actually mean on the same car!

But, now that you mention it...

I didn't either. I meant Thundernight side by side with this. But it wouldn't totally reek if you could manage the pare the two into one.
