List of parts requiring coding and/or registration for F series cars
For the DIYers out there, I thought it might be helpful to create a list of commonly replaced drivetrain parts on the F series cars that do or do not need coding and/or registration. As we all know, Germans can get rather crazy with electronic integration and control.
This is what I've come up with so far. Please feel free to add or correct me. Please keep in mind that this list is only for drivetrain parts only and not interior electronics or replacing the DME or some other onboard computer. It should be obvious that coding would be needed in those instances. Requires coding and/or registration - Battery replacement (registration) - Turbo electronic wastegate (coding) - Valvetronic servo motor (coding) - Older F series cars with EU5 fuel injectors (coding). I believe that these would be cars with pneumatic wastegates (typically 2013 and earlier) which would not apply to US spec 2 series BMWs. - ABS unit replacement (coding) - Automatic transmission and ECM replacement (coding) Does not require coding and/or registration - Brake fluid change - Brake caliper/rotor/pads/pad wear sensors - Driveshaft and axles - Rear differential including limited slip differential - Front transfer case (AWD cars) - Electronic damper/shock - Clutch, flywheel, and slave cylinder - Windshield wiper motor and pump - Charge pipe and related induction hoses/pipes - Intake manifold - OEM turbo assembly (without EWG) - Turbo diverter valve - MAF sensor - MAP sensor - Coolant replacement - VANOS solenoid - EU6 fuel injectors - Water pump - Spark plugs - Coil packs - Oil filter housing replacement/gasket replacement - Valve cover replacement/gasket replacement - Heat exchanger replacements (radiator, radiator fan, oil cooler, trans cooler) - Alternator and/or voltage regulator replacement
