Porsche Cayman S facelift revealed

Offering 20 horsepower more than its predecessor, the entry-level Cayman cranks out 265 horses thanks to a revised 2.9-liter powerplant. The harder ‘S’ variant sees its horsepower climb 25 to 320, thanks to an improved 3.4-liter Direct Injection engine. Both motors are said to be more efficient than the 2008 versions.

First seen on the redesigned 911 range, the new PDK dual-clutch gearbox offers a significant boost in fuel efficiency, not to mention faster shift times that equal quicker acceleration. Overall fuel economy for the base model is 26.4 mpg — an 11 percent improvement. For the Cayman S, estimated consumption is 25.5 mpg, for a total savings of 16 percent.

Acceleration to 62 mph is said to take just 4.9 seconds for the PDK Cayman S equipped with Launch Control and the Sports Chrono Package.

A new suspension system promises better driving dynamics and enhanced comfort, depending on driving conditions. A modified valve control map for the steering system serves to reduce steering forces, giving the Cayman even more agile steering behaviour.

The Cayman features the latest generation of PSM Porsche Stability Management now offering two new functions: Brake Pre-Loading and the Brake Assistant.

Whenever the driver lets go of the gas pedal very quickly — which is typical of an upcoming emergency braking manoeuvre — the PSM hydraulic control unit builds up an appropriate level of pressure on the wheel brakes before the driver even presses down the brake pedal, moving the brake pads slightly towards the discs for immediate action. This significantly improves brake response and shortens stopping distances accordingly.

Recognizing fast operation of the brake pedal and high pressure application, the PSM hydraulic control unit actively delivers the brake pressure required for maximum stopping power.

Both Cayman models come as standard with the new CDR-30 CD radio boasting a five-inch monochromatic display and the ability to play MP3 CDs. New PCM Porsche Communication Management available as an option complete with hard disc navigation serves as the central control unit for all audio, communication and navigation features.

I wouldn't say it's any better or worse than the already excellent looking Cayman.

i've looked at buying this car twice in the past...first gen, and current... the first sounded great, drove great, but was underwhelming in the acceleration department, and the interior was a joke. the current version, interior was just what it needed, but still left me wishing it excited me more when i stomped on the pedal. great looking car, over priced ( but so are the SLK and Z4's), also... the idea of having to pay for service kind of turned me off. i assume i am paying for it one way or another with my BMW... but out-of-site... out-of-mind. i've always wanted to own a porsche, looks like i'll wait until i can buy a 911.

How were you able to drive this new (2nd gen) facelifted model already?

wow guys, wow. slow down. the radio can now play mp3 cds, omg! oh and it gets better. "A new suspension system promises better driving dynamics and enhanced comfort." please santa, give the boxster and cayman some double wishbones, please!

im over porsche, they're like the other extreme of honda. hold back tech, but charge a bajillion dollars more when it eventually does come out. well, i guess they are better than honda in that it actually does come out...

oh and yes, updated looks are important to me, but updated mechanicals and tech are more so.

Nice to see they kept the weight low (3,031 lbs for Cayman S w/PDK), added LSD and increased the HP (Would have loved to see them bump it to 350, but understandably they don't want to get too close to the 911).

Overall it's looking good and some nice changes were made, also nice to see Porsche finally start getting some modern electronics in the cabin.
